Today again, I played memory game. The games are played by matching two same cards that have the same mythical creatures until all the cards are opened and matched. It's not an easy game anyways but it's simple if one's memory is active and retentive. The time taken to complete the matching is taken into consideration.

While playing the game, I stumbled on so many mythical creatures and one of them happened to be the mermaids. Mermaids are truly mythical because I haven't seen it in real life even though some people claim that they have. The stories I was told about them when I was small make them very scary such that going to the river alone then in the village was something I couldn't do. I didn't ever want to see it as I was told that they usually come out of the water.

I could remember when my big sister scared me with them. I made a hair with extension and I dreamt about swimming in the river with mermaids. Upon waking up, I started crying and my sister told me that it's because of the hair I made. That mermaids love that type of hair that's why they are appearing in my dream. Believing her, I cried even more and begged that my hair be loosened. You can imagine that believe and behaviour. Since then, going to the river became very scary to me. I didn't ever go alone until I built my courage as I grew up. It was that scary to me!

Well, mermaids are truly mythical and they are sea creatures that according to the story tellers, they are depicted as having a woman upper body and fish lower body. They are usually very pretty with long hairs.

When it comes to their behaviour, different story tellers or writers portray them differently. Some say they are weak and helpless, others say that they are wicked and merciless. Still others say that they love humans and are even attracted by their activities. According yet others, they say that they sing a lot and that their voices are melodious.

When it comes to their origin, many say that they come from Assyria and it's related to their goddess Atargatis who changed into mermaids due to shame that she killed herself accidentally. While the Europeans view mermaids as omens and at times associated with good fortunes . However, some say that they are responsible for all the shipwrecks, storms and drownings that happen in the seas.

I am from Africa and Mermaids are viewed as Mami water (mother of water or water spirits) and most people worship them because they view them as gods. They are usually portrayed in a very bad light over here in Africa and that is why we fear them especially children and those who worship them.

Someone was found offering sacrifices in the river and it was said that it is to mermaid that that person was sacrificing to. Another person always pour Fanta in the river each time he wants to embark on a journey through water. He believes that he will receive protection by doing that.

As for me, they are not real and even if they are, I haven't seen them and I wouldn't want to see them because there a lot of things I fear in water including snakes that are real. I don't want to think about them. And I don't think about them again ever since I grew up, at least not as something that can harm someone. I believe in the protection that the Almighty gives.

I am glad that I have participated. I will like to ask some of my friends to please tell me if they were told or if they read any mermaid stories when they were growing up and how did it make they feel, scary or not? @okere-blessing @genomil @impersonal @sahmie @yenny47 @uzma4882 @drhira @rutjjoe @ninapenda @bossj23 and others. I really want to know if it's peculiar to me.

My scores after playing the game for 4 times can be seen in the screenshots below

We have heard stories about mermaids, and people saying they have seen it with their eyes. I just doubt since It is mythical.

I have fear for water, even small water bodies now ocean, noo nah. Many communities and people carry out rituals in rivers offering snacks and drinks to mermaids, omor diabetes go too disturb mermaids for naija o😅

Most people who are afraid of water is because of the stories they have heard about these mermaids and people offer a lot of sacrifices just as you have observed too. The debates go really too much. E choke. Thank you for engaging

So comprehensive I must admit. Thanks for mentioning me in your post. I think I should top your high score in my next game play. The mermaid explanation you gave is wow. ....Reminds me of my childhood days where I was a big fan of little mermaid cartoon movie
