My Book, My Voice: A Journey Back to Myself

When I was in secondary school, I had an unquenched thirst for reading. My imagination was wild, vivid, and full of wonder. I would scribble my thoughts in journals, on the backs of notebooks, anywhere I could find space. I even used my little pocket money to buy books when other kids spent theirs on snacks. Writing was my happy place.

But no one paid attention to that part of me.

In my family, being brilliant meant one thing: you had to be a doctor or a lawyer. Writing was just a hobby to them, not a real path. So, I was ushered into the science class, told that was where smart kids belonged. And though I was capable, it felt like I left a piece of myself behind.

If you're a parent reading this, please, I beg you: look closely at your children. Watch what they gravitate toward. Don't mould them into your dreams, help them become who they truly are. Because the greatest gift you can give a child is permission to be themselves.

Years later, I have found my way back to that little girl who loved to write. And this time, I’m not whispering my words, I’m speaking with my full chest.
