It is now the month of Joishtho. The heat in Dhaka is intense. While moving through the streets, one can truly experience the scorching summer. In this heat, people constantly seek shelter for a bit of relief. Parched, they search for cold water. On the sidewalks, you can often see people selling lemonade made with ice and lemon. These attract passersby a lot. In such heat, a glass of cold lemon water brings a sense of peace to the soul.

That day, after finishing my class, I was wandering outside. The water bottle I had carried had also become hot in the sun. From deep within, I craved just one glass of cold water. Suddenly, I noticed a middle-aged man selling lemonade in front of the college gate. When I went up to him, I saw he had several ingredients for making the drink — lemon, tasty salt, and Tang. With those, he made and sold his lemonade.

Standing under a tree, I said to him, “Uncle, give me a glass of lemonade, please.” He prepared it and handed it to me. In that heat, that one glass of lemonade brought peace to my heart. I asked him how much it cost. He replied, “10 taka per glass.” I was surprised and said, “Only 10 taka?” He smiled and said, “Yes, 10 taka.” Truly, in this heat, 10 taka is nothing — a glass of lemonade brings such peace.

Then I asked him, “Do you earn enough from this lemonade to run your household?” He replied, “Yes, brother, by the infinite grace of Allah, I can manage my family quite well. But on days when it rains or gets cold, sales drop a lot. However, in the heat, I sell a lot more.”

In this picture, the act of a lemonade seller working under the scorching sun is shown in a special way. The photo captures him standing in the heat, quenching people’s thirst and earning money from it — money that he uses to support his family.

I took this photo myself, right in front of our college gate. After drinking lemonade from him and experiencing that deep satisfaction, I wanted to frame that feeling through this image. I took the picture using my own phone.
