I feel like you’ve covered so many things all at once — or maybe I missed something along the way. I found out that you’re involved in animal foster care... so that explains all the updates!
Also, that black thing — is it a pond? No, right? It seems too small to be one...

It's a small pond with a larger one draped next to it in the landscape. This is absolutely fine for geese, which always need fresh water to keep their feathers in good condition. Big buckets would do, too, sure. But it's much nicer this way in the end ;-))
