Contest: Courtesy

What do you understand by courtesy? Explain.
I see courtesy as the friendly or respectful way of handling issues involving others. Courtesy can be expressed in our words and can also be expressed through our acts and gestures. When we have courtesy as people, it shows others that we have good manners and value relationships. Some words we can use to show courtesy are please, thank you, I am sorry etc. In principle, courtesy is "celebrate with those who are celebrating, mourn with those who are mourning and do unto others what you want them to do unto you".

Yes, courtesy is essential and should be observed. Some of my reasons are:

Name five instances where courtesy is demanded in your culture.
- Greetings: Greetings are highly valued in my culture as they show our togetherness, and when someone greets you, courtesy demands that you answer.
- Dressing: Individuals are expected to dress and appear modestly; otherwise, they will be considered wayward children.
- Respect: Younger ones are expected to respect their elders and parents.
- Saying thank you when someone does something good for you.
- Listening to people's views or opinions without interrupting them.
State instances where courtesy was neglected. Maybe you witnessed it or someone told you.
I want to share two instances where courtesy is neglected:
- I know a boy whose father bought some items for him, and on collecting those Items, he left without even saying thank you. When his attention was drawn to that, he said it was his father's responsibility to take care of him. Therefore, there is no point in saying thank you.
- Someone mistakenly steps on a lady's leg and the first thing that she said was "Are you stupid?

What is your stand when it comes to courtesy? Tell us.
I see courtesy as a virtue that every human being needs to have as it helps promote harmonious living. Without a courtesy relationship, even among family members, it will crack. Therefore, let us all be gentle, humble, polite, generous and have other people's interests at heart so that we can create a conducive and pleasant environment.
