MAIN IDEA OF THE MOVIE
CHARACTERS
Among the many characters in the movie are: Angel: A little girl of 8 who is rejected by her father and sold into prostitution after her mother's demise.
Michael Hosea: A rural farmer and a devout Christian who later marries Angel despite her ugly past life.
Mae: Angel's mother who had Angel while being a mistress to Alex.
Duke: A pimp and pedophile who bought and introduced Angel into prostitution and managed her thereafter.
Madame Duchess: The mistress of the brothel where Angel worked.
Paul: Michael Hosea's brother in-law.
PLOT
The movie begins by exposing the viewers to the controversy between Alex Stafford and his mistress Mae who is revealed to hate the offspring of the relationship---Sarah(later renamed Angel). Alex withdraws his support from Mae and Angel thereby forcing Mae into prostitution so as to survive with her daughter Sarah. Before long Mae falls ill and dies leaving Sarah to the mercy of John her pimp. John in turn sells Sarah off to Duke who is also a pimp and a pedophile. Duke runs a brothel in a small town called Pair-a- Dice.
Sarah grows into a woman while working as a prostitute for Duke under a new name "Angel" as given her by Duke. Angel becomes an object of great admiration for the men of the town and they willingly pay even higher to sleep with her. She becomes the most expensive prostitute in the brothel.
Meanwhile, Michael Hosea, a hardworking farmer and devout Christian keeps praying to God for a good companion as a wife and prays He leads him to his future wife soonest. He travels to the town to supply some farm produce, sights Angel taking a stroll and immediately falls in love with her. However, he later learns that she is a prostitute. God must have a fine sense of humour, right?
Michael however goes ahead to pay to be with Angel(sleep with her). But when he gets the chance to meet her after many trials, he turns the meeting into a marriage proposal occasion! Angel is amused at such unusual situation. Michael however persists and Angel later obliges to marry Michael but not really out of choice as her saying 'yes' was her only way of escaping a near-death situation after she was beaten to pulp by the brothel guard Macgown for demanding for her gold payment from Duchess.
Michael carries Angel home and nurses her back to health while teaching her how to cook and perform other house chores. All this while, he refuses to sleep with her out of goodness and not hate.
The twist comes staring at the viewers' faces as Angel recovers and decides to run away from Michael! She does run away but Michael finds her and brings her home. Just as she begins to settle honestly with Michael, Paul surfaces! Paul is one of the men that had slept with Angel while she worked at the brothel. He tells his brother in-law (Michael) who Angel really is---a prostitute but it made no difference to Michael. This causes Paul to hate Angel even more.
Events that took place after this time reveal that Michael really loves babies and would want to have children of his own. Angel becomes quite uncomfortable at this even as she had fallen in love with Michael. Why so? Angel thought she is sterile because of a surgery Duke had forcefully performed on her while she worked at the brothel. For this reason, she decides to leave Michael once again so that he could find someone else that will bear children for him.
She asks Paul for help to be transported back to town. Paul obliges but asks to be paid with sex! Surprisingly, Angel agrees.
She finally gets to the town to learn that the brothel had been burnt down! She takes up a job at a bar so as to survive. But days after, she runs into Duke the pimp, her former manager at the brothel. Duke threatens to kill the owner of the bar and set the bar ablaze if Angel doesn't come with him. She follows him and resumes her prostitution work in Duke's new brothel. However, she gets to discover that Duke was still trading on little girls and she exposes this ugly situation during one of her appearance of the brothel stage. This information enrages the men in the brothel and they drag Duke and lynch him!
Angel rescues the young girls in the brothel and sets up an educational/literacy program for them while managing a small bakery shop. The is where Paul finds her and reveals to her that Michael still loves her and did not remarry after she left him.
She is deeply moved and decides to go back to her husband. She returns and Michael welcomes her with open heart and arms even after all she's done. He makes love to her for the first time and they have a son. She is seen happy and pregnant with her second baby for Michael as the movie ends.
SETTING
The movie is set against the 1850 Gold Rush in California. It's spatial settings include the fictional Pair-a- Dice small town and San Francisco in California.
The movie comes alive with the beautiful quite and slow scenery of the rural setting where Michael cultivated his crops and tended to his chickens. The simple wooden houses and their small well cared for gardens add relaxation and nature to the plot.
The 'bustling' small towns and cities featured that are laced with shops, people and fancies of the then developing civilities of the American Old West makes the viewer sniff the air and feel the aura of that time from the comfort of one's privacy. It's a beautiful work that was done there.
WHAT I WOULD HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY AS THE DIRECTOR.
If I were the director, I would have made Michael Hosea more a human by letting him vent anger, disappointment or discouragement at some point in the repeated running away of Angel. This is because through the whole time, Michael remained calm and undisturbed at his wife's poor decisions and actions of running away thrice.
CONCLUSION
Bible stories of faith, endurance, forgiveness and display of other virtues sound and seem simple untill one finds himself in situations that need the display of these. The movie brought this truth to the fore while reinforcing the expanse of God's love for mankind and His earnest desire to repurchase them from sin no matter how serious and forgiveness them.
Michael Hosea here therefore represents God while Angel represents sinful humans.

I love the movie you tried to talk about but I have a few observations.
There seems to be some form of plagiarism on this post even though the movie you talked about was an adaptation from a book but how come there is similarities with what I found online.

Though I registered since 2023, I'm just beginning to make posts. So I won't beat myself up for making errors. I'll learn the dos and don'ts with the passage of time.

However, please help me understand this: Does absence of plagiarism mean my sentence patterns, structures or even word choice or arrangement of words MUST NOT COINCIDE with something similar elsewhere? I ask because I personally typed this challenge without wanting to copy from anywhere because I HAVE WATCHED THE MOVIE. The two suspected plagiarized screenshots above I would strongly say do not look like my write-up.
For instance, there's no way someone who really understood the movie will not add the words "hardworking" and "christian" to the description of the character named Hosea. This is because that's what he stood for from the beginning of the movie to the end.
Again, the "God must have a good sense of humor" expression is a common expression and can be used anytime. I can go on and on.
Well, in all, I felt it would be proper to reveal my disappointment and discouragement at the neglect of the good effort put in the write-up for the highlighting of what I'll call mere coincidence.
Please, ma'am, I'd really love to know what I must do to avoid this kind of assessment another time because I love this kind of challenge and would participate in many similar ones to come. I hate the discouragement I'm feeling right now.
