Neighborhood Watch #105 - Reporting Events Around us
Hello friends of Steem4nigeria, hope we are all having a great time on the steemit community.
This few weeks has been intriguing for me. It has been a week of learning, drilling, parades, social nights and even cultural activities. I have had mixed feelings from every activity. But let's look at a special event that happened before the beginning of the week.
On Saturday, we were told that we would have a carnival day where a lot of cultures in Nigeria will be showcased. I didn't know how it was going to be but I had high expectations of the event.
All corp members were divided into platoons and each platoon represented a particular culture. But I was in the band, so I didn't join my platoon. This gave me the chance to watch every activity of the day. And yes I took pictures too.
There were 10 platoons and each platoon sourced for materials they needed to make sure they could showcase their culture. Since it was a competition, all platoons put in the hard work. We had the Ibibios, Igbos, the Hausas, Yorubas, The Benin culture and many other cultures from Nigeria.
Before the event started, all the platoons built a shade using palm fronds, they also designed their shades with different local clays. They had a king and a queen, soldiers, priest, villagers etc in each culture.
The event was marked open by the state coordinator of Nysc. He lit the torch for the event to commence. He went to each platoon and he was welcomed by the villagers before he went to his seat.
Since it was a carnival each platoon will walk around to showcase their food, dance, language and their way of life. It was going to be an amazing performance by each platoon.
There were more than 90 people in each platoon playing different roles, some midwives, some pregnant women, some dancers, and some village drunks....the list goes on and on.
It was exciting to see performances from different cultures. That made us appreciate each others' culture and it taught us that even with diversity we are one and should embrace each other.
Every platoon did very well in showcasing their cultures. Some of us before then learnt a few languages as each platoon used their languages. They also showcased their local foods. Each platoon walked through from platoon 1 down to 10 and there was also a cooking competition at the end of the event with platoon 10 winning. I was in platoon 10 and I was really happy.
At the end of the competition, platoon 6 won the cultural carnival. Platoon 6 showcased the Rich Ibibio culture....what stood out for them was the dancing they did. It was spectacular as I am from the ibibio tribe. Every culture was spectacular that day. I enjoyed watching the Hausas, Igbos, Yorubas and the Benin kingdom also.
At the announcement of the winners, there was a loud roar of victory from platoon 6 and they were presented the trophy. It was a special and memorable day. There were a lot of lessons we all learnt from the event... especially unity and Tolerance of each others' culture.
This is my Neighborhood report for the week.
I invite @imohmitch, @davidmarkgeorge to participate in this contest.
