Hello friends, how are you all doing today? I hope all is well and you all are having a nice and wonderful day. Today is all about drawing, and I will be sharing with you all a step-by-step guide on how to make a portrait drawing with a pencil.

Now, in this article, you will all find out that there's more to pencil drawing than the pencil itself. Below is the list of tools that I will use to make my drawing.

Tools

  • Plain sheet of paper
  • 10B & 12B Pencil ✏️
  • Soft charcoal pencil
  • Brushes
  • Pencil eraser
  • Kneaded eraser

Step 1

This is where I started my drawing. As seen above, you can see the picture that I'm about to draw, so I started with sketching out the picture on my plain sheet (FBB paper) before starting to give details.

Now the most important part is the detailing part, where you get to add light and shade to create the illusion of roundness of the object.

Now this is where I make use of my brushes. I don't normally use the pencil directly to give details; rather, I prefer scratching the pencil to become dust, put it in a container, then use my brush to dip in and apply it on my drawing.

Step 2

In this step, there's nothing different; rather, I keep following the same method of using my brush to apply detail on my drawing. As seen above, you can start seeing a female face.

Note:

You will have to be very careful to avoid adding too much charcoal dust on the surface, because an ordinary eraser won't be able to clean it, unless you're using a kneaded eraser or an electric eraser.

Step 3

At this stage the drawing was almost done in a normal person's eyes, but I wasn't even near being done because I still had some more detailing to give the drawing, but my biggest challenge was that the picture which I'd used to draw was blurry, so it was really stressing me out.

So the next day I proceeded to adding more and more details and also tried to pay attention to some crucial parts of the picture to make it look real, some parts like the cheeks and the hair.

And when I talk of making it look real, this is where the kneaded eraser and the pencil eraser come in handy. I used the kneaded eraser to brighten highlights like the forehead and some parts of the cheeks, while the pencil eraser I used to give some hidden face details like pimples and face lines, but it's always better to use the electric eraser, though it's very expensive.

So as seen above my portrait drawing was done and dusted, though I still have a long way to go in other to achieve hyper realism, but at least I'm trying my best.

Thank you all for your time I really appreciate it and I will like to invite @marvii, @sana-khan01 & @goodnews2020.
