Watch a movie from a country other than your own country or not of your country's origin.

I recently took part in a challenge to watch a movie or series outside of my country’s origin. After scrolling through Netflix for a while, I finally settled for a show I had heard about but never got around to seeing: Warrior Nun**. It’s a Spanish-American production that had a good balance of mystery, action, and some emotional depth. Though I didn’t expect much at first, the story really caught me off guard and I loved it.
The series isn't originally Nigerian, it's a product of Spain and the USA, but I got so drawn into it that it felt like I had a personal connection with the story.

Talk about the main idea of the movie

The main idea behind Warrior Nun is this: a secret order of nuns exists, trained to fight demons on Earth. But they don’t do this with just prayer—they actually wield weapons, use strategy, and have a deep connection to divine powers. One girl, Ava, wakes up in a morgue with a divine halo embedded in her back, giving her supernatural strength and powers. The twist? She wasn’t supposed to get the halo. She’s a paralyzed orphan who suddenly becomes the center of a heavenly war.

Share the Characters

The characters? There are quite a few, and each brings something unique.

The main character is Ava Silva, played by Alba Baptista. Her character is full of confusion, growth, and real human emotions. She’s not your typical hero. She makes mistakes, runs away, doubts herself—but that's what makes her feel real.

  • Sister Beatrice is another nun, quiet and calculating but a warrior at heart.

  • Sister Mary (Shotgun Mary) is bold, fearless, and doesn’t exactly follow the rules—probably one of my favorite characters.

  • Father Vincent is the spiritual guide of the group, but as the story progresses, he becomes more complex than expected.

  • Lilith is strong, ambitious, and struggles with jealousy and duty— she was the next warrior to receive the halo after the previous had died, but became envious when it was given to another.

  • And then there's Adriel, a character introduced later whose true identity changes the trajectory of the whole plot and shows how easily faith can be manipulated.

Describe the plot and setting of the movie.

The story is mainly set in Spain, with ancient religious houses/convents, narrow streets, and beautiful architecture forming the settings. You also see scenes across Europe—ranging from religious temples to modern underground labs. The contrast between ancient belief systems and modern technology plays a big part in the story.

Season one is focused on Ava discovering her new powers and trying to run from responsibilities, while the rest of the sisters try to stop demons that are invading Earth through mysterious portals. Season two digs deeper into the truth behind the Halo’s origin, the lies hidden by religious institutions, and the identity of Adriel.

The story also shows the internal struggles of each nun, how they carry pain and past trauma, but still come together to fight for something bigger than themselves.

Things get really interesting when secrets are revealed. The so-called angel who gave the original halo in the beginning; Adriel, might not be an angel at all and Father Vincent, who Ava and the others trust deeply, was working with Adriel. Betrayals happen, loyalties break, and the meaning of divine mission starts to shift. In season two, it all escalates—Lilith starts changing into something no longer human, Shotgun Mary goes missing, and Ava is forced to make harder choices.

If you were the Director of the movie what would you do differently?

If I were the director, a few things would have been done differently. I would slow down some scenes to give more space for emotional reflection. Some parts feel rushed, especially in season two, where too much happens too quickly. I would also dig deeper into the background of each warrior nun—give more flashbacks to show how they became who they are

Also, the ending of season two leaves you with so many unanswered questions. If I were directing, I’d make sure the audience didn’t feel abandoned after the finale. A bit more clarity and less mystery would’ve helped wrap things up better.. It would make the audience question their own beliefs while watching.

Now back to the point of this contest—talking about films from outside our country shows how connected we all are. A series like Warrior Nun is not just entertainment; it talks about identity, purpose, power, and belief. Things people anywhere in the world can relate to. The idea of feeling powerless one moment and chosen the next is something many people dream about—especially when life feels unfair.

Ava's journey is more than just fighting demons. It’s about deciding for yourself what’s right, and whether you follow a path chosen for you or create your own. Even though it has supernatural elements, there's a lot of real emotion in it—loss, confusion, love, betrayal, and hope.

In Nigeria, we have strong spiritual beliefs and religious values, so watching a series that also explores faith in such a dramatic way hit home. It reminded me that even in other parts of the world, people are struggling to make sense of the same spiritual questions.

So, if you haven’t watched Warrior Nun, I’ll say give it a shot. It's not just about girls in habits fighting monsters. It’s deep, it’s dark, it’s hopeful, and it keeps your mind running with questions. Not every day do you find a show that makes you question both heaven and earth.
