Trends in My Country
How It Shapes Us, Moves Us & Sometimes Consumes Us |

What current trends are there in your country and which areas does these trends impact?
Hello Steemians,
This week's topic on “Trends in My Country” got me smiling because I don't even know where to start from. In Nigeria, there are trends everywhere o — from the way we dress, talk, eat, and even the things we believe. It's like as one trend fades, another one just rises from nowhere just like they were on queue.
As a Nigerian youth, you can’t help but notice trends. They influence how we behave, what we buy, and how we express ourselves, especially on social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter (X). Some trends are funny, some are crazy, and some fit even change your whole life — both for good or bad.
Let me take you through some of the major trends I’ve observed in Nigeria recently and my honest thoughts on them.
Heard of Dami um Grrrrrrrrrrr? What's your view on this Tiktok trend and do you think hopping on it can boost your social media followers?
Social Media Craze; The “Dami um Grrrrrrrrrrr” Trend |
---|
Let’s start with this “Dami um Grrrrrrrrrrr” trend that’s making noise on TikTok. If you have never heard of it, then you probably have not been online for a while. It's that viral audio where people do some dramatic skit or act like they're going crazy with energy — full of fake rage, confidence, and boldness. The “Grrrrrrrrr” part always cracks me up.
It started as a joke but now everybody has jumped on it. Even vendors and tailors use it to advertise their work. Some use the audio to show off clothes or make motivational content. Others just act mad for nothing, hoping to go viral.
Does it help social media growth? Yes, to an extent. Many unknown creators have gone viral from simply hopping on trends like this. But my worry is, not everybody will handle the attention well. You may have followers today, but what will you do to keep them? That’s the question.
Show three trending styles of clothes in your country and compare it with previous ones
Fashion Trends – Drip don Pass Our Forefathers |
---|
Fashion in Nigeria no dey ever dull. Currently, these are the three hot styles:
- Oversized Wears – Baggy jeans, oversized shirts and jackets. It started small, now it has now turn full-blown movement. From Lagos to Abuja, boys and girls now rock this trend. It's comfort and swag that drive it.
- Two-Piece Outfits – Matching sets of trousers and shirts or skirts and tops with bold colors or Ankara prints. It’s stylish and easy to slay in.
- Streetwear Influence – With sneakers, cargo pants, nose rings, bucket hats. Inspired by hip-hop culture and fueled by Instagram & TikTok influencers.
Compared to our older generation’s style of wearing fitted senator wears or neatly ironed native attire, this new generation just freestyles everything. Sometimes, most of these clothes are just big looking like they don't even have sizes 😅.
Fashion trends have moved from “dress to impress” to “dress to express.” But sometimes I feel people just overdress to attract likes and attention online.
How do you feel about trends? Do you think hopping into it can expose your little life, making you insecure?
Trends Beyond Clothes – News, Food, and Vibes |
---|
Nigeria doesn't lag behind when it comes to viral news. From celebrity dramas to political gists, trends spring up like wildfire. Remember when Portable sang “Zazoo Zehh”? Everywhere scatter. Even some politicians jumped on the trend. That same thing happened with Hilda Baci’s cooking record – everybody wanted to cook for 100 hours straight.
Now on the food side, we see funny trends too. Like people adding spaghetti inside egusi soup or drinking fufu water for “cleansing.” I don't even know where some people get these ideas from. One time, I saw someone eating rice and ice cream and calling it a “sweet combo.” people are trying o 😅.
My Personal Thoughts on Trends |
---|
Trends are like waves. You either ride them or they pass you. Sometimes, it’s fun to jump on a trend — you feel connected, part of something big. Other times, trends can pressure you to live a life that is not even yours.
I feel like not every trend is meant to be followed. That’s the hard truth. Some trends will push you out of your comfort zone in a good way. But others will throw you into depression if you're not careful.
We see people faking lifestyle online just to fit into trendy spaces. Some borrow clothes, rent cars, or use filters to look like billionaires. Before you know it, comparison will start, and you begin to doubt your own life.
Trends can make you feel insecure if you're not grounded. But at the same time, if you use trends wisely, you can grow — especially in business or content creation.
Trends That Took Lives |
---|
It’s painful but true — some people have lost their lives because of one challenge or trend. From dancing on moving vehicles to drinking harmful stuff in the name of "online challenge."
In 2023, a young guy in Abuja died while trying to record a stunt for a “don’t fall challenge.” People forget that life has no reset button. All in the name of views, likes, and clout.
This is why we must apply sense before jumping on trends. If it doesn’t add value or it puts your life at risk, then we should not engage in them.
Conclusion – Trends Are Tools, Use Them Well |
---|
Trends are powerful. They shape conversations, influence buying decisions, and even change our lifestyle. But let’s not forget that all those trends are temporary, and our real value comes from who we are, and not what we follow.
I enjoy some trends and ignore others. That’s shows balance. I believe you don’t have to follow every trend to be relevant. Instead, find the ones that flows with your vibe and use them to express your creativity without losing your identity, trying to become something else.
So yes, trends are everywhere in Nigeria, from clothes, slang, TikTok skits, celebrity gist, food combinations, music, and even politics. But at the end of the day,
Let us remember that,
“clout is not purpose.”
