How I Sew a Boubou Gown (Tutorial Session)
Hello my beloved Steemians, welcome to vicvine25 sewing session
This post is in the fulfillment of my introduction post I promise to be sharing my sewing experience and tutorials with steemit family. For today, this is my first video tutorial as more complex ones will come come. I believe in the learning principles that says, start from the simple to the complex
Today, In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through how I sew a beautiful, flowing boubou gown (free gown) using these exact body measurements:
This were the exact body measurements I took the client:
Gown Length: 57 inches
Bust: 40 inches
Waist: 36 inches
Hips: 40 inches
Shoulder Width (Back): 15 inches
Sleeve Length: 12 inches
Round Neck: 3 inches
Half Cut (Shoulder to Waist): 15 inches
The cutting section
What are the items or material I needed to carry out the cutting:
3–4 yards of fabric (Ankara, silk, chiffon, etc.)
Tailor’s chalk
Measuring tape
Scissors
Sewing pins
Sewing machine
Matching thread
Step 1: Folding and Marking
I Folded the fabric in two (lengthwise) with the right sides facing each other.
I folding it again width-wise, giving me four layers, this allows me to cut both the front and back at once and keep it symmetrical.
Step 2: Marking Out the Measurements I took.
Here, creativity is needed, you need to picture our the gown or you sketch it out. Now Let’s draft the gown based on the measurements taken.
For the Length: I place my tape From the top fold, then I measure 57 inches down and mark. Add 2 inches for seam and hem allowance.
Bust: here little calculation is needed, since the fabric was folded by 4, so I Divided 40 by 4 = 10. Add 2 inches allowance mark 12 inches across.
Waist: I Divided 36 by 4 = 9. Add 2 inches allowance mark 11 inches.
Hip: I Divide 40 by 4 = 10. Add 2 inches allowance mark 12 inches.
Shoulder width: 15 inches divided by 2 = 7.5 inches. Mark it at the top.
Armhole depth: Usually 8–9 inches for bust 40. Mark 9 inches.
Half-cut: From shoulder down, mark 15 inches to place bust, waist, and hip lines.
Neckline: Mark 3 inches wide and 3 inches deep for a round neck. Use a curve ruler or freehand the neckline shape.
Step 3: Cutting the Fabric
I carefully Cut along all the marked lines: neckline, shoulders, sides, and length.
For the sleeves, I cut short flowy sleeves directly from the body
Step 4: Sewing stage
The fabric was ready for sewing.
Final Touches:
To make my work and finishes neat, I carefully Iron all seams neatly for a professional finishing and to bring out the beauty of the dress.
Here is your boubou gown ready
It’s stylish, free-flowing, and perfect for any occasion.
Hope you love and follow the steps.
