The Diary Game || 09-03-25 || Involved in Garri Production

Dear diary, do you know that the joy of every farmer is to see a bountiful harvest and enjoy it while it lasts. This was what we saw during the week that is just included. Without further ado, let’s get into the details.

Throughout the week, I had to engage in different activities ranging from workout sessions, farming and other meaningful activities. My mother gave an issuance that she’ll uproot the cassava in her allocated school farm. In no time, it was uprooted, peeled and sent to the mill. Here is where my story begins.

On the bright morning after necessary home chores were completed, I was asked to accompany my parents to the mills for the crushed cassava retrieval. We went and picked the bags home. From here, the main process began. The activities at home were split into two which were cooking for the family and frying of garri. My sister took the former while my mum and I chose the latter.

Basically, the frying of garri involves 2 main processes: sieving of the dried crushed cassava and the frying itself. The sieving process majorly involves sieving the crushed cassava using a special sieve to obtain fine grain. The residue is thrown away while the fine grain moves into the frying process itself. I was opportune to work on both aspects.

The bags of crushed cassava to be sieved were 7 in number. Since it was brought much earlier, I had to begin work. My mom set up the fire for the frying. Below is the process of frying garri.

• First, the sieved cassava will be poured into a preheated pot.
• After some moment of turning it, you’ll add red oil to the sieved cassava. This step makes the common yellow garri we know. But, if it’s left that way without the oil, the result will be white garri.
• The mixture is turned till the result is crisp and dry.
• Then, the life saver (Garri) is made.

The fact everybody needs about Garri is that it’s a friend to the rich and the last hope to the common man. Any Nigerian students who underestimate the value of Garri underestimate life itself. After the whole process, I had to honor an appointment. The essence was to pick up materials for sewing as my course mate will be getting married soonest. The single might be oppressed but I won’t panic. After that, I came home and slump to bed as I needed rest more than ever.

That’s how I spent my day.
