The sounds of hoes, brooms and neighbors echoed at sunrise that morning. There was, however, a community service cleaning of gutters and village roads on that day. I was hesitant to head outside at first because I overindulge in me and me resting on Sundays. But after hearing the call of the neighbors, I chimed in.

Men with hoes were at work on the streets breaking the soil in the gutters. The junk was being gathered into a pile. The women were making hot sweet tea and fried bananas for all who had taken part. I participated in some group work where I, along with others, used a broom to gather some of the dry leaves on the ground and while doing this, I spent some time with the other beginners. It was certainly a perk that we got to meet up with other people in our class and provide assistance to each other.

The cool thing was seeing the little kids help. They held small brooms, they gathered plastic bags, they ran around laughing. They occasionally made the room more crowded, but they brought joy. It harkened back to my childhood when I used to go pick up hours at community service just to play in the water on the gutters.

It took about two hours to clean the gutters, and water was flowing once more. The streets looked neat. It appeared that everyone was pleased with the day's work. From there, we went back to the guard post to take a break. The sweet tea the women made us was delicious after a long sweaty day. We chatted, talking about village news, market prices for vegetables, and even who had the dirtiest clothes that day.

I think it’s great for keeping the place tidy and connecting with your neighbors. Indeed, today many people are so wrapped up in their own lives that they can fail to say good morning to their neighbors. It’s a way to hang out and meet one another.

That day I came home happy, despite a tired body. I liked what I saw in clean world, and I felt connected to my neighbors.
