This concept of bread and games is not new to me but the name is new. I never knew the concept had a name, I just know it is a method used by the government to shift people's focus from something to another, like the games and bread. Even though it might not be the same strategy, it is expected to achieve the same result. It is funny how the same strategy has survived for years, maybe even millennials and yet people still fall for the same trick today.

I saw the history of the bread and games. I also saw some interesting things you need to read, so I'll just share them with you below:

"Bread and circuses" is a metonymic phrase referring to superficial appeasement. It is attributed to Juvenal, a Roman poet active in the late first and early second century AD, and is used commonly in cultural, particularly political, contexts. Link

"Bread and circuses" refers to the tactic of providing superficial appeasement, particularly through material benefits and entertainment, to distract a population from more pressing issues or to quell potential dissent. The phrase, derived from the Latin "panem et circenses," originates from ancient Rome, where emperors used free food and public games to keep the populace content and less likely to criticize the government. The concept, popularized by the Roman poet Juvenal, highlights the idea that providing basic necessities (bread) and distractions (circuses/games) can be a way for a ruling power to maintain control and stability, even at the expense of addressing more serious societal problems. In essence, it suggests that people can be easily pacified with superficial pleasures and material comforts, diverting their attention from issues that might otherwise lead to discontent or protest. Link

Today, the phrase is used to describe similar situations where governments or other powerful entities offer distractions or short-term benefits to deflect criticism or prevent public outcry over deeper issues. Examples could include excessive government spending on entertainment while neglecting social welfare programs, or focusing on trivial news stories while ignoring more serious problems. Link
