Welcome to the San Roque Parish Church 🙏

San Roque Church is a Roman Catholic church located in the municipality of Cordova, which is in the southeastern tip of Mactan Island in Cebu, Philippines and south of Lapulapu City. It is also called Cordova Church.

Snippet of the History

Cordova became a separate parish from OPON(now Lapu-lapu City) on May 22,1863 with a decree promulgated by Gov. General Echague Y Birmingham on June 23, 1864. Cordova as a parish was presented to Cebu and was given the name San Roque Parish of Cordoba.

The venerable patron Saint in whose honor the new town dedicated was St. Roque of Montpeller, France, who himself was a victim of leprosy. He is the Saint specially invoked against the plague. At that time, Cordoba was the home of many lepers. Bishop Mariano Denson, bishop of Cebu, formally proclaimed the establishment of San Roque parish on October 8,1864.

ARCHITECTURE

The old church was made of stone, wood with the roof of nipa. The first Holy mass was held on October 8,1864 that was officiated by Rev. Fr. Jose Salazar as the first parish priest that teaches first the “Doctrina Christiana” to the natives.

In 1949, the stone, wood and nipa church were reconstructed under Rev. Fr Antonio van Odjick to adapt the growing population.
The third reconstruction was on 1962 led by Rev. Fr. Martin van Westland, MSC, which became a significant symbol of the faith and hard work of the Cordovanians.

The church throughout was renovated in contemporary style combined by Moorish and Gothic elements in it. Its façade is designed as porte-cochere. It has four Corinthian columns that are fluted and topped with peaks made of minor fluted pier and bulbous spire, dividing the façade as well as the pediments into three sections and where the middle section is wider than the other two.

The main entrance has a carved saint surrounded by dogs. St. Roque of Montpellier, France, is also a patron Saint for dogs.

AMENITIES

A gated gymnasium is also inside. In front of it is also a wide parking space and the toilet is in the side. At the back of the gym us where the candle lighting area is. At also there is an entrance/exit for walking people.

FIESTA CELEBRATION

August 16th every year, also the commemoration of the locals for the life and works of the Saint as well as the Dinagat festival as a local culture.

THE ALTAR

Jesus on the cross with two angels besides Him as the focal point of the church. Where the Mass is celebrated. The Birhen sa Lourdes on the left side and the Statue of San Roque on the right side.

OFFICE AND THE SHOP

Is located inside the church at the left wing. There is also a statue of Father Jules Chevalier in the corner church who was a missionary of the Sacred Heart.

OUTSIDE

The entrance is arched with the name of the church. At the side are the flower and candle vendors. The parking is wide, on the right wing.
At the front of the streets is the Cordova Police Station.
