Team Europe – Still Digging, Still Hoping (Report #1)

in Steem POD Teamyesterday

It has been a few years since any of the team members were responsible for a steemcurator account, during which we’ve all been active and primarily curated manually with our own accounts.

When the Steemit Team announced their new approach to the curation teams, we thought that it was the perfect opportunity to brush off our steemcurator caps and apply - something we had been considering and discussing for a while.

With our combined experience with the platform and various tools that we have created over the years, we were confident that we could find some gems, hidden away from communities.

Having seen a decline in European authors, our approach of “Europe first” sought to bring more prominence to this under-represented group.

We were proudly awarded the largest steemcurator account (03) and soon set about our business of seeking the best that Steemit has to offer. We set out clear guidelines which follow our own ethos of seeking out authors and contributors that have a positive impact upon the platform:

  • Not supporting vote service users
  • Supporting users who see Steemit as their primary platform (i.e. cross-posting on Hive - who have long attacked Steemit users)
  • Not supporting users who transfer out all of their STEEM
  • Supporting users who spend time reading and engaging with others - consistently seen in the comments section.

As a team, we’ve always seen the above criteria as the “basics” (Notice that there’s no mention of post quality at this point!).

Our optimism and enthusiasm quickly evaporated.

What we saw surprised us and whilst we’re aware that there is already some repetition above, we’ll avoid repeating as it has already been covered in the below posts:

We could go on - we haven’t even mentioned the frustrating lack of quality and low effort across the platform and that we are also competing against 10 other curation teams and the sc01 and sc02 accounts in a race to vote on the better content first. Frequently losing this race.

We have all committed a huge number of hours this week with the mindset of helping the community, rather than ourselves (this post has a beneficiary of... 100% to @null).

Imagine our disappointment when yesterday, we were questioned about our use of the allocated voting power.

it looks SC03 is not well used, I need to remind you and pls sync with your team

We’re still waiting to understand what the below means but it’s not good enough:

We’ve gone out of our way to ensure that our votes only go to people who deserve them. That our votes are always made with a minimum of 95% voting power, so as to benefit the author as much as possible - not ourselves.
Perhaps we’re not as in-tune as we’d like to think.

Ouch!

Despite all of the above, we were able to find a few authors that we’d like to highlight this week - as much for their engagement across the platform as for the posts themselves…

Mit der Tutana vor Istrien, Umag 1994 by @jochenpaul, Germany

@jochenpaul is a rare but very welcome author in the German community. We were recently able to read the final part of his very personal account of a sailing trip off Istria almost 31 years ago. You can read about the adventures of the mostly "newcomers with little or no sailing experience" in three parts (Part 1, Part 2).

Musou Black by @bluelavender, Nigeria

@bluelavender has published a short story that can certainly be described as a fictional psychodrama. Using literary stylistic devices, the author succeeds in building up an arc of suspense that captivates the reader until the rather unexpected end. She is a gem for friends of stylistically and linguistically first-class stories.
In a nutshell, the psychodrama is a mother-daughter conflict that spans many years of the adolescent girl's life in the absence of her mother. I can't give any more away, otherwise I would take the tension out of the text. Read it for yourself - it's worth it!

@diodao is a user that frequently appeared in our search for European content. Hers is a name that we consistently came across in the comments section of the Ukraine for Steem community and this selection is in recognition of that engagement, as much as it is for the post itself.

The Waiter of Arroyo de la Miel by @quotes-haven, Singapore

When we quickly ran out of content from European users worth voting for (or the votes for a single user would have accumulated too much), we looked for users who write about Europe. We came across an article by Quotes-Haven, in which he describes a holiday destination in Andalusia (Spain). We made a ‘mistake’ and voted hastily without realising that the author was using a delegation service. The resulting dialogue and the immediate action of the pensioner, who often spends his holidays in Spain, was amazing. Engagement bonus!

@linux911 writes around one post per week suggesting that he only writes when inspiration outweighs obligation. This is reflected in his recent post about the film ‘The Perfect Patient’.
As the film tells the true story of the alleged serial killer Thomas Quick (whose real name is Sture Bergwall), the author also writes about this unprecedented case of failure of justice, psychiatry and the police, leading @moecki to put the film on his wish list.

The Diary Game: Квест - знайди будинок мами) by @nobilisa, Ukraine

It’s rare that I’d support an author who predominantly writes Diary Games and I’m aware that this selection is hugely biased by the fact that @nobilisa visited the town that I grew up in and even tried to find my mum’s house (oh, so close)! So I’m unashamedly including her!

Your Fellow Community Members are PEOPLE, not Just “Upvotes!” by @denmarkguy, USA

After a week of foraging for content, @denmarkguy has articulated exactly what we’re feeling as curators. He’s also another author providing meaningful engagement in the comments section of others.

Die 10 häufigsten Sprachen auf Steem & SteemSearch Update v1.3.2 by @michelangelo3, Germany

Hehe, another one of those cases that was "unfortunately" voted on by sc01 the moment the article was published – we lost the race...
In an extensive conversation, @michelangelo3 sensed our deep frustration and, overnight, worked on an update to his SearchTool to support us in our work. For us! For the community!
As mentioned before, this man has no need for financial rewards anymore - but we want to mention him here to doubly emphasise just how deeply, deeply, deeply we appreciate his dedication.

Bye, bye!

@chriddi, @moecki & @the-gorilla

how deeply, deeply, deeply

What?! 😉

 yesterday

I spent a good chunk of my day skimming through curation reports and the nominated content. It's been a while since I last walked out of my usual reading zone, but reading yours, the-gorilla's and denmarkguy's recent posts made me do it. While at the end of the day, I did find some great articles and new users to follow (loving the European additions), all thanks to your (and all other diligent curators') efforts. But there was some below average content making it to the top too. Is it that bad? I know it's easier to judge sitting on the other side of the stage but isn't it better to not nominate at all then featuring something with 5 kilos of spelling errors just because the author(also a curator) in question might return your favour. Or is it just me who can't see the talent because it is voted by not one but two curation teams. Which brings me back to NO Questions — some people do spend less than 30 minutes on a post and don't bother proofreading their could-be-great content and for some curators "greed" is not a negative term.

Is it that bad?

We all have different ideas as to what’s good. In our case, we spent far too long searching for the content we’ve selected. It really shouldn’t be this difficult.

Based purely upon numbers, if we vote at 50%, we need 20 posts per day. If there are 11 teams, that’s 220. 7 days per week, we’re talking over 1500 posts per week of a sufficient quality to get support. Even the bigger communities have fewer than 200 active posts, most of which aren’t worth the bandwidth they’re consuming (both literally and mentally).

It’s literally a race to vote on the known authors which is why you’ll find that almost every comment under our posts is also supported!

How do you feel about joining our team for the week and experiencing it for yourself?

 yesterday

I know content quality is purely a subjective matter. But spelling correctly is a basic standard or is it not? Specially when it changes the whole meaning or makes the statement absurd?

Like I said, it was easy for me to judge, I didn't want to write this (knowing all the issues curators face) but there was this post that made me lose it. I know it's difficult and how time taking it is — thank you for the Maths, the situation sounds even more grave. 🙄

Specially when it changes the whole meaning or makes the statement absurd?

Especially 😜

I know it's difficult and how time taking it is

It's very time consuming and I wouldn't be surprised if other curators take a shortcut to save themselves a lot of time. I'd definitely be more careful with pick of the week though!

thank you for the Maths, the situation sounds even more grave. 🙄

I talked to the team about it earlier in the week as we were getting increasingly frustrated. As the week progressed, we upped our voting percentage to ensure that we could sleep!

 yesterday

Oops. Bad timing. 😅

I totally understand all the troubles. It gets more difficult with sc03 — the percentage handling.

I'd definitely be more careful with pick of the week though!

That's just what I'm saying.

It's probably best that I avoid looking at what other people are doing. I was shared another "pick of the week" today and... I... erm... yeah. You know.

I couldn't quite understand it. I came to the conclusion that it was AI generated and then rolled through a good dose of dog shit to the point at which it looked clever... but was totally unreadable. Pick of the week that was. Funny how I was able to guess who nominated it too.

But they're "overcoming the difficulty" so you know, that's ok.

Did you ever play a game called "bollocks" at school?

Haha, you know what the whole situation reminds me of right now? The day we finally decided to found the NO Community... 😉

Can you imagine that we (oh yes, a community effort in a shared document...) even worked on this report for a little over half an hour? Hm, about two days in total... the three of us!

I'm laughing my arse off! It has never occurred to me before to give spelling mistakes in kilograms. I'm going to steal that idea from you without permission and just weigh it from now on!
The problem is sad and serious. It's cheeky and disrespectful to publish something like this in the age of correction programmes. That's one side of it. The other side is the impertinence of people who have no idea about the language used ‘curating’ something like this. If they translate at all, the translator corrects the mistakes...
I had such a case in DU. A businessman who certainly wouldn't think of sending such spelling rubbish as an email to his customers. You don't need to correct for Steemit... I never voted for him for that reason (and told him so), but on foreign curator accounts he was on the subscription list. Annoyed me a tiny bit sometimes...
He now corrects the texts... 😊

 yesterday

It's all good and exciting if you stay in No Community. The minute you step out.... it starts getting frustrating. I should go back into my bubble.

I can totally imagine the time and effort you guys have put into this report and curation.

In this case, kilograms seemed to add more weight to my claim than tons. 😅

Can spellings be fixed with a translator? Especially when the new word has a tangible meaning. Like "knee" and "keen".

Next time you're having a browse, I recommend popping into the Ukrainian community. There's a highly active core that breathes a lot of life into the community (hence the number of nominations this week!).

The good thing is: when it's time to return to the bubble, I definitely don't feel guilty about it... 🤪

Like "knee" and "keen".

The good programmes that check grammar and meaning at the same time can do this. Google can't...

Hm, about two days in total... the three of us!

I think we might even have started it more than 2 days ago!

Yes, you’re right. But do we really have to publicly admit just how truly, truly stupid we are?!

NO compromises 😁

Although I mostly see those on the platform, I took an example from that))

This is why I tend to ignore Diary Games. They normally begin with:

"I woke up at 6am. Today was a very special day. I brushed my teeth and washed." etc. then a photo of their breakfast. I stopped reading them a long time ago - I wrote this over 2 years ago - I can't remember what it says, but it's probably still true. Oh, it's only a short post.

I enjoyed visiting the Ukrainian community. It's one of the few that has a lot of meaningful, genuine engagement. A few of you mentioned in this post and there are others too that are on our radar.

Thank you It was very nice to see myself and other members of the Ukrainian community in your post. This makes me want to blog even more, thanks. 🙏💕

 yesterday

Our optimism and enthusiasm quickly evaporated.

You're experienced users, with a good ability to influence others. You can't lose the spirit with which you received the account. I think you need to relax your approach a bit and look a little further. There are still alleys on the platform that many don't usually take; perhaps you can explore those paths and fall in love with the landscape (content).

I wish you luck in this second week.

You can't lose the spirit with which you received the account.

Unfortunately, I don't have such pathetic thoughts when I get the keys for the SC account.
But what I have seen in this community are the outdated roles of many users (e.g. event-horizon, chriddi). You are a mod. Can you or someone else please take care of that.

Greetings friend, I'll be working on it.

You're experienced users, with a good ability to influence others.

And the hope is that through posts like this, and those which @chriddi, @denmarkguy and I have written in recent days, we are influencing others. We have certainly touched a few people but nowhere near enough.

I think you need to relax your approach a bit and look a little further

Easier said than done. We’ve got standards that are core to our beliefs… that we’re unwilling to compromise on. If we start compromising, then multiple things would happen:

  1. Our enjoyment would die
  2. We stop being unique
  3. We blend in.

None of which benefit Steemit.

There are still alleys on the platform that many don't usually take;

Ours being the one that lies lusciously green and untrodden.

 yesterday

We’ve got standards that are core to our beliefs… that we’re unwilling to compromise on.

Sometimes, to get better players, you have to go to camps and try to recruit those who have the potential to instill the culture you want on Steemit. Many users are already a finished product; and worse, they're not malleable.

Maybe your team can recruit a Lamine Yamal.

Yamal was at Barcelona for 9 years before he made his debut 🙂

 yesterday

That's why I tell you it's necessary to recruit and develop a player so they adapt to the team's characteristics while maintaining their individual essence. There are interesting players (in this case, users) who, with a little support, can demonstrate or give much more than they have shown.

Barcelona has a flexible standard because it doesn't expect to find a fully-fledged player, but rather seeks them out from a young age and develops them. Other examples include Messi, who was a player from the age of 13, and Xavi at 11, among others.

Continuing this analogy, isn't that what the Youth (Newcomers') Team is for? The team that's responsible for nurturing talent and developing them into better players (like a youth team coach would). Then when they're good enough for the first team, they are slowly integrated?

Hansi Flick wouldn't be coaching these youngsters until they're more developed and are beginning to fulfil their potential.

Hansi only has so many hours in a day, he can't be spending them with the Under 11's when there is a dedicated team employed to do that.

Going one step further, they'd earn very little in the form of wages until they reach the first team and prove themselves.

Some will have played hundreds of matches before their 1st team debut and 99% of them won't have the ability, talent, discipline and determination to reach that level.

 yesterday

That's why I say, knowing the factors that can influence the development of something or someone, why get discouraged after just a week? Is it easy to find good and/or excellent players? Success is not achieved immediately anywhere, unless you bet all the millions of euros in the world on it.

There may be a team teaching and motivating newcomers to Steemit, but what if some decide to follow their own ideas, and their own way of doing things? (there are many of these).

For me, if I were looking for something, I would just take the first week as a "reconnaissance" session. The second week will certainly be better.

If you walked 500 miles looking for strangers to help, when you’re only physically capable of walking 10 without damaging yourself, would you walk 500 more in the hope that it might get easier? Also knowing the damage cause after the first 500?

And knowing that the last time you did this journey, things were far better (bad).

Thank you for the mention. I will drop by the other posts to have a look, and give a little support. 😊

I will drop by the other posts

Cool! This makes such an unloved report (for all those who ‘have to’ write it and all those who are not mentioned...) even really useful... 😉

 yesterday

Interesting selection.

Sadly a couple of the posts had expired and the authors had not made any more recent votable posts.

Thank you.

Yes, there’s definitely some truth to that.
But what’s even sadder is letting such posts disappear into oblivion, just to keep chasing “something” in order to quickly offer “something.”
The latter often results (as it did this week) in “Picks of the Week” that barely surpass the quality of an unedited second grader’s essay.

I choose to see it positively:
There are still users who don’t take part in the unappetizing race for the attention of big stakeholders.
Users who write when they feel like it or when they actually have something to say.
And then? Well, that usually leads to something good... 😎

Keep on seeking them out...
