• What you know about hepatitis?

Hepatitis is a liver disease. It is caused by a virus. The types of hepatitis are 5 (A, B, C, D, and E). Hepatitis B is passed from person to another through the blood or body fluids such us through the use of infected needles. Blood also spreads Hepatitis C and slowly destroys the liver.

A large number of people in Bangladesh seem to be unaware of hepatitis. Especially in villages people don’t even know that there is a vaccine for hepatitis B through which they can be shielded from the virus. The early symptoms are often mild and inapparent, and therefore individuals have no clue they have infected with the disease.

• Have you seen a hepatitis patient ever in your surroundings?

Yes, I have seen hepatitis patient, whose name is Rina, she is my sister in law. She had hepatitis. At first, she had no disease sign but after that her eyes and skin color changed into yellow colour and even her urine became yellow in color. In her case the doctor explained that explained she was lucky it was not hepatitis B or C. She recovered with treatment in a few weeks, but it was about a month or two before she felt strong again.

A few months ago I also saw hepatitis patients at Narayanganj hospital. I felt sad seeing their condition.

These experiences showed me we shouldn’t ignore hepatitis. We can save ourselves from serious health problems through early treatment and prevention.

• Is hepatitis curable?

Treatment for Hepatitis

It can be cured but depending on the type. My sister-in-law got over hepatitis. Hepatitis A and E are usually self-curable as the affected person just requires adequate rest with medical supervision. But Hepatitis B and C are serious. Hepatitis B also is preventable through a vaccine, but once you get infected, you require constant treatment. Hepatitis C also has a treatment, but if not taken early, it affects the liver in a big way.

Hepatitis vaccines are available in Bangladesh at the government hospital at a fairly cheap price. My husband and I are discussing about the important to take the vaccination appointment.

Bangladesh needs more awareness, since most of people don’t know about the vaccination and with proper care hepatitis can be prevented easily.
