"Biosecurity Measures"

in Healthy Steemlast month
Hi Everybody

Assalamualaikum!

How are you all? I hope all of you are well and happy in your lives. I am grateful to see every new day in my life. I thanked to Allah for this blessing.

First of all i am thankfull to @helengutier2 for organized such an amazing contest in @Healthysteem. I am really happy to participate in it.

What is biosafety?

Biosafety refers to practices designed to prevent the spread of infectious diseases and protect people, the environment, and communities from potential biohazards. This includes the safe and controlled handling, storage and disposal of biological agents such as bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms to minimize the risk of exposure and transmission.

Biosafety is crucial in a various settings, including:

  • Healthcare facilities
  • Laboratories
  • Research institution
  • Animal care facilities

Do you know the most important biosafety standards that healthcare workers must follow?

  1. Personal Protective Equipment: This includes wearing gloves, a mask, a gown, and eye protection to prevent exposure to bodily fluids.

  2. Hand Hygiene: Wash your hands like frequently and thoroughly with soap and water or use hand sanitizer.

  3. STANDARD Precautions: Treat all patients as potential sources of infection and follow standard precautions to minimize exposure.

  4. Decontamination and Disinfection: Clean and disinfect the area and equipment regularly.

  5. Safe Injection Practices: Use sterile needles and syringes for injection and properly cover used sharps.

  1. Proper Handling and Disposal of Biohazardous Waste: Use the designated containers for sharps, Biohazardous Waste, and infectious materials.

As far as I know, all of these safety precautions help prevent the transmission of infectious diseases and protect patients and the community by providing healthcare.

We have disposable materials and fluid-resistant materials. What do you know about these materials?

DISPOSABLE MATERIAL
It is designed for single use and is discarded after use. It is often used in healthcare training to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases.
Example:-
Disposable gloves
Disposable gowns
Disposable syringes
Disposable masks

Fluid-Resistant Material
These materials are designed to prevent the entry of bodily fluids such as blood or saliva, which are often used in healthcare training to protect healthcare workers and prevent the transmission of infectious diseases.
Example include:-
Fluid-resistant gowns
Fluid-resistant masks
Waterproof covers
Impervious containers

What do we avoid with biosafety standards?

  1. Exposure to bodily fluids: Avoid direct contact with bodily fluids such as blood, saliva, and other potentially infectious materials.
  1. Improper use of PPE: Avoid not wearing or using personal protective equipment such as gloves, masks, and gowns incorrectly.
  1. Recycling or reusing disposable materials: Avoid reusing disposable materials as they can harbor pathogens and compromise biosecurity.

  2. Cross-contamination: Prevent the transfer of pathogens from one person to another, surface or object

  1. Inadequate hand Hygiene: Avoid failing to wash hands or use hand sanitizer.

By avoiding all of these, we can minimize the transmission of many diseases and maintain a safe environment for healthcare workers and the community.
