Swimming from a survival strategy is now a great form of exercise and body relaxation. From ancient times, Early men swam so that they could navigate their way through water for survival instincts. As the years evolved, it became a sport that is widely known around the world and spreads like wild fire for acceptance. In this publication, let's see swimming from my personal perspective.

What do I think about swimming is it a sport, an exercise or a healthy activity?

For me, I see swimming as a bridge between all aspects: as a sport, exercise and healthy activity.
In terms of sport, it is widely accepted around the world as a type of sporting activity. It's to a point that the Olympics has adopted it as a sporting activity publicly aired throughout the tournament.
In terms of exercise and healthy activity, it's help in creating a full body workout that enhance physical and mental health.

Health benefits of swimming

Swimming has diverse health benefits to the human body. Let's dive into a few of these benefits.

  • Improve the cardiovascular health: Here cardio refers to the heart which happens to be an important organ in the human body. When a person swims, it is noticed that the breathing pattern is changed. This change has the ability to improve cardiovascular health. Also, the risk of potential health diseases will reduce to null.
  • Muscle Endurance: If you are looking for a good exercise that will teach you the power of endurance, then I'll endorse swimming for you. I understood that when I was under water and had to cover a few distances before coming to the surface. The muscle will appreciate you if you think of swimming as an option.
  • Reduce Joint Stress: While swimming, you'll realize that you have to move the body in an orderly pattern. With that, you'll notice that joint pain might be alleviated.

Have you ever tried to swim? Share your experience

I have opportunities to swim on 2 different occasions. First encounter with swimming was on a travelling expedition to Nsit Ubium LGA. I was asked to go to a local stream to fetch water. With my travelling partners, I went to the stream but couldn't enter the water at first. But I was pressured that I had to give in. They advised me to be at the shallow part since it's my first time. For me, I was just trying how long I can last under water. The challenge was challenging but I did it regardless.
My second encounter was with my Steemians family and some members of Stay fit at AKMAG Hotel swimming pool. Since it was a paid service, the cleanliness was visible and readily noticed. We changed to our swimming trunks. At first, I made up my mind that I'll stay in the shallow part of the pool despite the pressure to come to the deep part of better understanding. It was until Miss Juliet from Stay fit club gave me my first swimming lesson and I explored the deep part of the pool.

Some tips and tricks to keep in mind while swimming

Since I am a newbie in the world of swimming, I might not have much tips like the experts. But I'll give out what I learnt from the elites in the world of swimming.
First, you should imagine yourself floating on water instead of sinking. This will give you the courage to do your first stroke. Drowning doesn't happen instantly, rather it begins with the mind of a swimmer.
Also use a floater if you are a newbie to the world of swimming. This will help you from getting drowned. Most importantly, eliminate all forms of fear and see the water as an advanced land to tread on.
