The first time a musician broke a guitar on stage
It happened back in the summer of 1964, when the band The Who was still known as The High Numbers. They were playing on the Railway Tavern pub stage in London, which was a really reduced space for the band to play. The guitar player, Pete Townshend unintentionally hit his Rickenbacker guitar against the ceiling, and seeing that it had been severely damaged, he decided to finish its destruction, to the spectator's amusement. "Some of them were laughing, and I thought: damn, it's broken, so I better finish it off" remembered Thownshend, in 2004.
That incident caused so much impact, that for the next presentation of the band, dozens of people couldn't make it to the club where they were playing. During that presentation, Thownshend decided to restrain himself, but it was the drummer Keith Moon who decided to sacrifice his drums in order to keep the audience satisfied.
