Chattogram Medical College Hospital, or CMCH for short, is the only public hospital in Chattogram city where patients can receive medical treatment at government expense or for a nominal fee. It is located in the Panchlaish Thana, on the eastern side of Prabartak More on KB Fazlul Quader Road, and the road is widely known by its name. Services here are available 24/7, seven days a week including on special holidays.

It was established in 1957, before the country was formed. Initially, the number of beds was low but it has increased over time and currently, there are more than 2,000 beds. However, many more people receive treatment in the outpatient department. The main building is seven stories and houses most of the services, but with the addition of many new units, several new buildings have also been constructed.

Here, you can see a professor or a specialist doctor for your desired problem for a nominal fee. The cost is only 10 Taka/0.59 STEEM, which is fantastic, right? Yes, the cost is very low, affordable for all classes of people, but about the quality of service? Since it is a developing country, most people cannot afford treatment at private hospitals, so they are forced to come here. At CMCH, you will receive service, but you may not be satisfied with it.

Patients have been given beds in the hallway due to a shortage of beds.

If I were to talk about the hospital's environment, I would disappoint you. After entering the main building, you will see so many patients everywhere that you won't be able to walk forward. A single unit or department has about 30-40 different wards, and the number of beds is negligible compared to the number of patients, most patients create their own beds on the floor, in the corridors and on the walkways. To be honest, after entering the medical wards, you will not want to stay there for long, but helpless people are forced to stay due to financial problems.

Yes, like other private hospitals, you will also find cabins here, which are much better than the beds in the wards. You might think that you can get a cabin simply by low paying, but unfortunately, it is very difficult to find a vacant one because there is corruption at every level of the medical college. You may even have to bribe the attendant standing in the elevator to use it. There is a lot of corruption in every ward, unit, lab, and for diagnosis test. However, the biggest relief for people is that they can get treatment here at a low cost.

A queue of people at the counter to buy tickets.

I want to give you some information about the rules for getting service. First, if you need to consult a doctor in the outpatient department, you have to go to the ticket counter and buy a ticket for 10 Taka. You may be asked for some information there, such as which specialist you want to see or what problem you have come for. The time for seeing a doctor in the outpatient department is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Besides this, duty doctors are available in different departments at other times.

It is better to go as early as possible because you have to wait in a long line to get a ticket, then find the desired department, complete some formalities, and then visit a specialist doctor. Most visitors complain that the doctors do not spend enough time with the patients, and their behavior is not satisfactory. Secondly, if someone wants to be admitted, they have to buy a ticket for 15 Taka and maintain some formalities to get a bed in the ward. However, they are unlikely to get a bed because they are almost always filled with patients.

All diagnostic tests are done here, and the cost is comparatively very low. Various tests from private medical or diagnostic centers can be done here for 60-70% less. But, the real problem is getting a serial number. In a diagnostic center, you can give a sample simply by paying the test fee, but it is not possible here. The queue is so long that if you somehow manage to get an entry today, you might be able to give your sample after 3-4 days even more. For some tests, the serial number is given after even 20-25 days.

Patients come to the hospital hoping to get well with treatment. For a patient who needs immediate service, every hour of care is very important because a patient's physical condition can change within minutes. But, admitted patients at CMCH are often neglected when they need crucial service. As a result, many patients try to move to another hospital after being admitted here. But those with significant financial problems are forced to stay, abiding by the medical rules. It's not that patients don't get service, they do, but there can be a delay in providing the special care that a very critical patient needs.

You may wonder why patients come here for service if there is so much neglect. There are some cases for which treatment is only possible at CMCH. Especially for road accidents, burn injuries, suicide attempts, etc., which are police cases, those patients must come to CMCH first because private hospitals do not want to admit patients with police cases. And the biggest reason why everyone comes here for service is the very low cost and the availability of government facilities. For patients, CMCH is a blessing in these regards.

The hospital also has a number of other services that patients can take advantage of. Duty doctors are always available in the emergency room, so you can get service even at late night. Patients can get several services for free, including food and consultations. A few ambulances are always available at the hospital, which you can rent for your desired area. Currently, the government is trying to improve the quality of service by making efforts to develop this hospital further.

One-stop emergency care: Instant primary medical treatment.

To put it in one word, CMCH is a blessing for patients in some cases and a curse in others. You will find a doctor available here 24/7, whenever you go. It is the only hope for everyone in any emergency situation. Patients may not get the service they expect here, but the matter of immediate primary care in any emergency is only possible here.

Chattogram Medical College Hospital is the only hope for people to get low-cost treatment. Private hospitals are the first priority for financially stable people, but most people in our country are low-income, so this hospital is a blessing for them. For any emergency treatment and immediate doctor's advice, apart from the quality of service, CMCH is still the best institution for everyone.
