It is a very well-known tree in Bengal. Scientific name: Dillenia indica. English name: Elephant Apple, Chalta Tree. Bengali name: Chalta, Chatim Phala, Hathi Chalta (in some regions)

Chalta is a medium to large evergreen tree. The height can be up to about 15–20 meters. The leaves are very large, broad and have notched edges. The length of the leaves is usually up to 20–30 cm. The veins are parallel and quite clearly visible. The flowers are large and white in color. The diameter can usually be up to 15–20 cm. The fragrant flowers usually bloom in the monsoon. The fruits are large, green, round and notched. The ripe fruits are sour.
Elephants and cows like to eat this fruit, so it is called Elephant Apple.

The fruit is very sour, so it is used in vegetables, chutneys, pickles, and curries in its raw state. Pickles and juices can be made with ripe chalta. Helps digestion. Useful in cough, cold and sore throat. Helps reduce diarrhea and stomach pain. Helps keep the body cool. Because the flowers are beautiful, it is planted as an ornamental tree in many places. Although the wood is of medium quality, it is used for household purposes in some places.

Chalta tree grows in various countries of South and Southeast Asia including Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Thailand.
Usually grows in moist and fertile soil, along rural roads, in gardens and fields. Seedlings grow from seeds. The rainy season is best. Lightly shaded and moist places are required. Usually, fruits start to come after 5-6 years.
