SLC26-W1 | Street Business Diaries: Street Food and Snacks
Hello friends, writing about street food is quite exciting. It is exciting in the sense that, I eat street food everyday.
In Nigeria we have different kinds of street food depending on the location and way of life of the people in that location. I presently live in Rivers state and unlike the state where I stay before now, Rivers state is different a little on its choice of street food though with little similarities. In Akwa Ibom State, the street food seen most is grilled chicken and plantain but let's take a look at the food enjoyed in the city I now live in.
What kind of street food is available in your city or area? |
---|
I presently live in the city of Eleme, very close to the sea and also a boundary with the city of Portharcourt. The kind of food available in my city is Bole and Fish.
Bole is a Nigerian language for Roasted Plantain, yam. It is in almost every state in Nigeria but very famous in Port Harcourt. Almost every street has a stand of roasted plantain, yam and fish being sold. The plantain is salted same with the yam, the fish is seasoned and then roasted. There is a sauce also which is used in eating this delicacy.
Port Harcourt is very known for this delicacy and we are going to be exploring my favourite stand.
Have you eaten these foods yourself? Show their taste and price in pictures+videos. |

Before coming to the city of port Harcourt, I usually love eating Bole and Fish but it wasn't a popular business in my state. You couldn't see it on every street though people eat and enjoy it too.
But coming to the city of Portharcourt, I now have my favourite vendor. I was introduced to it by a colleague on one of our break time from work. I bought it and since then, it has turned to a regular food. I eat it almost everyday during breaks.
I love eating Bole and Fish and these is how much you can use to buy it:
Food | Price in Naira (Steem) |
---|---|
![]() | 500/1000 Naira each (2.4/4.8 Steem) |
![]() | 600 Naira each (2.89 Steem) |
![]() | 200 Naira each (Steem) |
Some of the fish are bigger than others... For the big ones, the cost is 1000 Naira and for the small ones 500 Naira.
The roasted plantain cost 600 Naira each and the roasted yam cost 200 Naira each.
The sauce comes for free.
The price is affordable and pocket friendly, which means everybody can have a taste of this lovely delicacy.
What did you learn about the shopkeeper's struggle? |
---|
One thing I have learnt about street business is that it is never easy. It needs consistency and a know-how on customer service. My Shopkeeper and her daughter were very very friendly, smiling while selling to me all through.
While I was having a chat with them on how they keep up with always being around, they told me it was never easy but they always have to come for their customers. She told me, they usually have to go to the market to get plantains, yams and fish, some times there's inflation in the price of these items and they have to make sure they maintain the price while also making profit. She said, she's always available because she can't afford to be absent when a customer comes buying .
But the struggles to keep up with the inflation of goods and services each day was something she decried about.
One thing I learnt about their struggles is that no matter what they go through, they always make sure they are present and always put a smile on their customers' faces. This one attitude has taught me to always try to make people around me happy even in the provision of services.
What do you think about the importance of these small street food businesses in our society? |
---|
The importance of this street business can't be overemphasized. People who wake up early in the morning are always present to have their breakfast here before going for the day's work.
Some of us who don't carry food to work, go here for lunch.
This street food is also important because it is an healthy food and it satisfies too. It is nutritious and offers protein and carbohydrates.
We all enjoy eating this food, we all enjoy having this meal. One of the favourite food in Nigeria...
I am so glad that I get to buy my bole and fish from Stella's Bole and Fish Stand.

Omor, bole is one of the best street food, it's not that common here in Akwa ibom but we have several stands with good presentation of this street food.
My friend told me that PH is like the center of Bole, he said almost every street has a bole joint, this is a recommendable street food for every visitor or tourist.
Wishing you luck
I haven't eaten food like this for many years, I'm looking forward to it.
