01. What are the festival-centric businesses in your area?

In my town, festivals always bring a colorful variety of temporary stalls and small businesses. You’ll find toy shops for children, balloon sellers, traditional clay crafts, women’s ornaments, tea stalls, and many more. Some people also sell traditional street foods like chotpoti, fuchka, and jhalmuri, which become even more popular during these festive moments.

The pictures I’m sharing today are from a Hindu religious festival. Among the stalls, the most eye-catching ones were pickle shops, toy shops, and clay craft stores.

02. Have you ever bought anything from these stores?

During this particular Hindu festival fair, I didn’t buy anything, but I looked around closely. The pickle stalls were selling a variety of pickles at very affordable prices. For example, 100 grams of pickle started at just 60 BDT, and depending on the type, the price could go higher.

What fascinated me the most were the clay craft stalls. The products were colorful, full of variety, and very affordable. The small clay fruits were priced at 10 BDT each, the clay animals/birds at 30 BDT each and the clay money banks at 30 BDT each.

There was also a tiny juice stall where you could get a glass of lemon juice for only 10 BDT.

03. Why are people more attracted to street stalls during festivals?

Festival street stalls naturally add more life and excitement to the celebration. People are drawn to them because they are colorful, vibrant, and often sell items at lower prices than big shops. At night, the stalls shine brightly with lights, creating a festive vibe.

You also find unique seasonal items at these stalls, such as toys, ornaments, and traditional snacks that you wouldn’t usually get in a supermarket.

On top of that, the festive mood encourages people to enjoy street food and shop in the open-air markets with family and friends.

04. Are these businesses contributing to preserving local culture?

Yes, absolutely. Many of these businesses sell traditional items such as handmade crafts, pickles, toys, and local snacks that reflect our culture. For example, the wide variety of pickle stalls reminds us of our food heritage and keeps that tradition alive.

These local businesses don’t just earn money during festivals; they also help keep cultural practices alive for the next generation. In my opinion, they play an important role in preserving and showcasing our local culture.

During festivals, the clay items we see at roadside stalls are often hard to find at other times of the year. And even if they are available, they come in very limited quantities.

Alongside these, there are also different types of traditional toys that are simple and inexpensive compared to modern toys. But these items carry our heritage they remind us of our childhood days when we used to play with such handmade toys, moments that we still cherish dearly.

For the younger generation, these festival-centric businesses serve as a bridge to our cultural roots. They not only offer affordable and traditional products but also keep our heritage alive by passing it on to the next generation.
