🏵️SLC26-W4 | Street Business Diaries: Service-based professions🏵️

Dhaka is a busy city. Every day, millions of people move, work, do business, do education and conduct medical activities. In the crowded and busy life of so many people, not only big businesses, but also small and medium-sized service-based professions have become essential. Among them, barbers, mobile servicing, watch/glasses repairers, van ice cream vendors or street tea shops have all become part of Dhaka's social life. However, the profession of mechanics is in the highest demand among these.

What types of service-based occupations are most in demand in your area? (Barber, mechanic, watch/glasses repairer, van ice cream vendor, etc.)

There are now countless vehicles on every road in Dhaka. According to government estimates, an average of more than 5 million passengers travel in Dhaka every day, and a large part of them depend on motorbikes, CNG, buses and private cars. So many vehicles mean that they are constantly facing small and big mechanical problems. The scope of work of mechanics is very wide, such as fixing bike brakes, clutches, chains, repairing tire punctures, repairing engines, fixing batteries or lights, servicing and tuning

These tasks are absolutely essential to keep daily movement smooth. As a result, it is clear why mechanic shops are one of the most essential service-based businesses in Dhaka city.

Have you ever used these services yourself or purchased anything? Show pictures + videos and show their prices.

I will tell you about my own experience. I took the bike from the madrasa to work for the madrasa student union. Some problems arose with my bike on the road, so I took the bike to the mechanic's shop. The problems were that the bike's brakes were not working properly, and the chain was making unusual noises.

When I went to the shop, I saw that the place was not very big, but there were machines arranged in every corner. On one side were tire repair tools, on the other side were oil and grease, and inside was a heavy machine for opening the engine. Although the room was small inside, people had parked many bikes on the side of the road to fix them. They had all rushed to this garage with various problems.

The mechanic brother started checking the bike thoroughly. First, he patiently listened to me about the problem, then started working step by step.

★He opened the brakes and found out what was wrong inside.
★He opened the chain and cleaned it and used new grease.
★Finally, he rode the bike and tested it.

The whole job took about half an hour to complete. I thought it might cost a lot, but in the end, everything was fixed within 300-350 taka. Not only was the work done, but the mechanic explained to me how regular maintenance reduces the risk of such problems on the bike.

Were you satisfied at the end of the work or were you ever disappointed?

I was satisfied with my experience. However, in the context of Dhaka, the situation is not always the same. Because almost all shops in Dhaka city are seen working to cheat people.

Satisfaction aspects:
★If the work is done carefully, the customer is happy
★If the problem is solved once, it saves time and money
★If the use is good, the customer returns to that shop later on

Disappointment aspects:
★Many shops ask for additional costs
★Sometimes if you work in a hurry, the problem remains
★New mechanics cannot solve the problem completely due to lack of experience

However, since I had a good experience, I am satisfied and have kept that shop as a hope for the future.

Do people appreciate the work of the shopkeeper? If you have personal experience, please tell us.

People in Dhaka are generally very open. If the work is done properly, they do not hesitate to praise. In my experience, some people thanked the mechanic out of joy, some sent their friends to the same shop after seeing the quality of the work.

In my personal experience, after the work was completed, I also thanked the shopkeeper. The bike was not mine. I had taken the bike out for work at the madrasa, but I was very tense when I encountered such a problem. You solved my problem so beautifully through the mechanic, I will be forever grateful to you. Then he said: "I try to make your heart happy when I do the work." This one sentence made me understand that many mechanics work not only as a profession, but also as a sense of responsibility.

The mechanic profession is not only a source of economic livelihood, but also very important socially. It is their responsibility to keep daily travel smooth. They are contributing to keeping the city's transportation system running. They also have a role in reducing accidents, because proper servicing reduces the risk. If mechanics in Dhaka stop working for one day, the entire city's transportation will come to a standstill.

All in all, the importance of the mechanic profession in Dhaka is immense. As the number of vehicles increases, the need for mechanics increases. Without them, the city's transportation system will practically come to a standstill. In my personal experience, I have seen that they not only do the job, but also prioritize the trust and safety of the customer.

That is why I believe that mechanics are the most admirable and indispensable among the service-based professions in Dhaka city.
