in the wild plants that are not edible usually have a bitter taste, not to mention that these plants are not ingested by local animals. I think it is always best to avoid eating plants that you don't know if they are poisonous or not, now if you are lost and need to eat to survive, a good technique is to see if other animals eat them.
You're right, if other animals don't eat it, then you should probably be really careful :) Another way to determine edibility is through the Edibility Test.
