What is the most famous festival of your country? When it is celebrated or occurs?
Every country celebrates various festivals based on their own culture and religion. Our country is no exception. We also celebrate various festivals. However, since we Bangladeshis are mostly Muslim, we value our two Eids the most. Among them, we value Eid ul Fitr the most. Therefore, we celebrate many festivals on this Eid day.
Eid ul Fitr is held on the 1st day of the Arabic month of Saban. Before that, we fast for a long month of Ramadan. We follow the command of the Almighty God complete the fast and enjoy the joy of Eid on the 1st day of Saban.
What is the significance of that festival in your country's traditions and in your religion?
Islam is a religion of peace. Before Eid, we go a long way in purifying ourselves by fasting for a full month. We are all servants of the Almighty God, the followers of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and we learn to follow the rules and regulations that the Almighty God has given through the Prophet. I also learn that all people are equal, there is no such thing as high or low lineage.
This great example of peace and modernity is seen on the day of Eid. On that day, we all become one. We pray in a row in the mosque, hug each other, and exchange thoughts with each other.
- We see the manifestation of how peaceful Islam is on the day of Eid.
- Eid brings us the message of peace and happiness.
- Eid removes the hatred between us.
- Eid helps us strengthen the bond of brotherhood among all of us.
- Eid helps us to develop compassion for each other.
Afterall, Eid comes with a message of happiness, and people of all classes participate in that happiness.
How is that festival celebrated? Is there any traditional foods or activities linked to it?.
There are several religious stages of the Eid festival. For example, in the morning, we wake up from our sleep, put on new clothes, apply perfume, and dress up to offer Eid prayers. Everyone offers Eid prayers together, and the poor and the rich forget their differences, hug each other, exchange greetings, and invite each other. Everything helps to bring the message of peace.
Then come the social stages. At one stage, we greet the elders, receive blessings from them, accept Eid gifts from them, and invite them.
We take special care of the little ones. We give them Eid gifts. We are happy with their happiness. We make various efforts to increase their happiness. We meet friends and relatives and invite them to our house for lunch and dinner. We also spend the day organizing various entertainment programs.
Joy and special food are intertwined. There will be special food on the special day of Eid. On that day, there are different types of sweets, pulao, biryani, and various meat items. Delicious special food is distributed to the guests throughout the day and we also spend the day eating delicious special food ourselves.
What is one unique fact about this festival that most people don’t know?
We all know about Eid which is a day of celebration. We spend the day celebrating various festivals. But one thing is unknown to many the fasting that we do for a month before Eid, the effort to be energized by the glory of the Almighty, is fulfilled through the special prayers that we offer on the morning of Eid.
Another thing is that all Muslim communities believe that during the month of Ramadan, Satan is kept in chains and the punishment of all the grave dwellers is stopped. This situation remains until the Eid prayer. After the prayer is over, Satan is released from his captivity and if there is any punishment for the grave dwellers, it is resumed. Therefore, special prayers are arranged for everyone during Eid prayer, so that everyone can be in peace, and the grave dwellers can also find peace.
