Old Bus Depot Markets, Canberra, Australia

Sundays are always normal days for me, as I wake up in time and prepare my breakfast, but last Sunday was a little more exciting, as I wanted to visit my favorite Old Bus Depot Markets with my family.

I had to finish a couple of offline tasks left last night, so I decided to have my lunch at a unique stall at the Old Bus Depot Markets.

I wanted to do something different this Sunday to mark the change of season, so I thought, what better way than to visit Old Bus Depot Markets? I have selected the shops & shopping malls category and am posting about this unique shopping center.

The Old Bus Depot Markets

I have visited this place before, but on Sundays Canberra’s Sunday best, the Old Bus Depot Markets, as it opens for a limited time on Sundays only, is my place to go.

Old Bus Depot Markets is not just a market, but it's a culture, a culture that brings the creativity of the original people of Australia, the people of Australia that lived here before the British entered this land.

They started it in September 1994; it was the beginning of the Old Bus Depot Markets.

They show you their culture and diversity that remind the visitors what it takes to survive and thrive! These people have done exactly the same. They have not only survived but also have a place in modern society.

As we entered the market halls with high roofs, vast halls,

We saw different stallholders featuring seed food and

Sweet treats, including chocolate, and there were themed homewares.

Unique arts and crafts

The Markets is always buzzing with music and dance.

I feel all Canberrans, and not only the original inhabitants, visit the Old Bus Depot Markets on a Sunday.

I always look forward to being a part of the local crowd and a unifying part of Australia.

Different clothes and hats

It is already full of people covered in hoodies all over the market halls, a great reminder to me that winter is already here in full swing.

Today, once again, it remains a great day as we walk around the stalls and watch the unique creations by locals.

A visit on Sunday is to remember the good artwork they share with us in this remarkable land surrounded by oceans.

“We are thrilled and happy this Sunday, as it means having to walk along with fellow Canberrans (yep, the residents of Canberra are known as Canberrans) at the Old Bus Depot Markets.

Love experiencing food from different cultures? On Sundays they add a touch of international ‘flavor’ to the food they offer at different stalls.

Want to buy something creative? You'll be inspired by the originality of the region’s most talented textile artists showcasing and selling their handiwork. Yeah, they know how to create designer fiber.

The Old Bus Depot Markets’ idea came in 1992. Initially it was an idea to open a weekly market in Canberra, but today these markets have become one of the most visited places by not only the locals but everyone worth their bread and butter.

This weekly market opens every Sunday, showcasing Aboriginal Australian designers, makers, and artists, and of course now more businesses have entered the arena.

It's become a place full of wonderful characters and their products that all come together each Sunday to surprise and delight all.

This market began with the ideas of two local women in 1992.

They thought about a high-quality weekly market in Canberra

They come here with purpose! They show you how they create beautifully designed clothes at their local workplace.

Love experiencing different cultures? On Sundays they add a touch of international flavor to the food they offer in tents and trucks besides in the main hall.

Visit this market on Sundays, where the local artists showcase their designs, as they are the finest makers and artists. These designers bring their creations to this market and set up temporary stalls.

If you are interested in fancy items, visit this market on the fourth Sunday of any month for wonderful collectible items that you would like to keep in your collection, right from old records and books to, well, you name them, they are on sale.

Lovers of fine handcrafted wares, clothing collectors, and food fanatics are just a few of the people who don't mind eating anything here.

They looked at different market buildings, talked to people about how to make a good market, and thought about style and products.

Basically two women found the perfect setting in a large industrial space that was formerly an old bus depot in Kingston. That place was on auction, but they somehow convinced the local government body, and they were allotted the place.

Now the market is 31 years old, and the owners have been experimenting with different things, like they acquired another building along the Old Bus Depot next to what was once the Powerhouse, now converted into Canberra Glassworks. This place has turned into one of the most popular among the visitors as well as locals of Canberra, the Australian capital.

The business owners have changed who had started the markets, but they have done enough to bring this market into the Australian Tourism Hall of Fame. Today the Old Bus Depot Markets counts among the top ten most visited places in Canberra.

Today the Old Bus Depot Markets Director, Anthony Niravong, a local Canberraan with Chinese heritage who speaks different South Asian languages as well as having 20+ years of experience in hospitality and retail, is trying his best to give a new addition and look to this pride of Canberra.
