Un’affascinante ma controversa ipotesi scientifica sta tornando a far parlare di sé: il panpsichismo, l’idea che tutta la materia possieda una forma di coscienza, non solo gli esseri viventi. Secondo alcuni sostenitori, come il biologo Rupert Sheldrake, persino il Sole potrebbe essere dotato di una sorta di mente.

Questa teoria, benché oggi appaia estrema, ha radici antiche. Già i filosofi greci ipotizzavano una forma di anima universale. Nel 2021, Sheldrake ha avanzato l’ipotesi che il Sole, in quanto sistema altamente complesso e dotato di intensi campi elettromagnetici ritmici (simili a quelli presenti nel cervello umano), potrebbe possedere una forma di coscienza. Secondo Sheldrake, tali campi elettromagnetici potrebbero essere l’interfaccia tra una “mente solare” e il corpo fisico del Sole. A fascinating but controversial scientific hypothesis is making a comeback: panpsychism, the idea that all matter possesses a form of consciousness, not just living beings. According to some supporters, such as biologist Rupert Sheldrake, even the Sun could be endowed with a sort of mind.

This theory, although it seems extreme today, has ancient roots. Greek philosophers already hypothesized a form of universal soul. The term “panpsychism” was coined in the 16th century by the Italian philosopher Francesco Patrizi, and enjoyed a certain popularity in the 19th century, when the famous psychologist William James publicly supported it. However, in the 1920s, the Vienna Circle—with its current of “logical positivism”—relegated it to the margins of academic philosophy, requiring logical and experimental proofs for every philosophical statement. Renewed interest arose starting in 2004, thanks to the neuroscientist Giulio Tononi, who proposed the “integrated information theory of consciousness.” According to Tononi, consciousness could be an emergent property of complex information systems, potentially spread everywhere in the universe. This idea inspired a sort of “renaissance” of panpsychism, with important scientific figures such as Christof Koch who reevaluated the possibility that groups of elementary particles could give rise to forms of consciousness, as happens in human beings.

Among the most suggestive theories, that of Rupert Sheldrake stands out, a biologist with a solid academic past, but later known for having explored themes considered “heretical” by traditional science, such as telepathy or the mystical properties of crystals. In 2021, Sheldrake advanced the hypothesis that the Sun, as a highly complex system and equipped with intense rhythmic electromagnetic fields (similar to those present in the human brain), could possess a form of consciousness. According to Sheldrake, such electromagnetic fields could be the interface between a “solar mind” and the physical body of the Sun. If this hypothesis, purely speculative, were true, the Sun could even “choose” the direction of events such as solar flares or coronal mass ejections — phenomena that have a significant impact on the Earth, especially on our technologies
