For me, onigiri isn't just a snack; it's the perfect breakfast, a comforting lunch, or even a quick pick-me-up any time of day.
My go-to filling is salted salmon. That perfect trifecta of seasoned rice, savory salmon, and crisp seaweed is pure bliss. Simple, yet so satisfying!
My weekly routine usually includes a trip to Family Mart for my onigiri fix, along with some other Japanese 甘いもの amai mono (sweets) as a little weekly treat. I think theirs are a cut above the rest – even better than Jusco or 7-Eleven, in my opinion!
I've tried my hand at making onigiri at home, truly I have.
My first attempt? The onigiri crumbled; everything separated – the rice, the filling, the seaweed – the moment I tried to take a bite, like a messy divorce. I just had to use a spoon to eat them after that.
The second time, they looked so perfect on the outside until I took a bite. I squeezed them so hard they turned into a mushy lump. A disaster...
I like my rice firm, unless it's porridge, so that was a hard pass. I've decided not to take another attempt for a while; looking at the disfigured onigiri is just too heartbreaking for me!
Speaking of onigiri, I've always wanted to try Yaki Onigiri.
For those unfamiliar, 'Yaki' translates to 'grill,' making yaki onigiri the delicious grilled rendition of rice balls. Crispy exterior and are often brushed with a savory soy or miso glaze.
Just writing about it makes my stomach rumble!
I had them at an izakaya last week. The smoky aroma and the slightly charred texture were heavenly.
Now, I'm craving it again, and I think I'll have to "cheat" a little to satisfy this one. My plan is to buy a ready-made onigiri and then grill it at home to get that perfect "yaki" crisp.
Now I'm also craving for Yaki Onigiri Chazuke.
Chazuke on its own is already a comforting and delicious dish, with rice steeped in tea or dashi. Imagine adding that aromatic, grilled rice to it!
I'm sure it would melt away all my stress for the week.
