I want to become a beekeeper! - Issue #17 - World of honey - Honeydew honey.

I can't stop being surprised at how much I don't know about seemingly simple things that surround us, and some of them I often use, for example, when I want to drink a cup of tea with honey... what did I know about honey?

It turns out that I knew very little about honey, and if I found myself in front of a shelf in a supermarket on which jars of honey were displayed, I accepted with faith what was written on the labels of these jars.

I know about the existence of some varieties of honey, for example, honey from mixed herbs, also known as May honey, honey from acacia, linden, buckwheat, lavender and sunflower, I need to add expensive chestnut honey, but this. perhaps everything that could be summarized by the word - honey.

As I learned later, in addition to differences in taste, these types of honey differ in their properties and here, if you look into it, a question arises that no knowledgeable beekeeper can answer - why do bees bring types of honey to the hive that they cannot use to maintain the bee colony in winter?

Yes, some types of honey crystallize so much that bees cannot open the honeycombs without the help of a beekeeper, and some types of honey can lead to intestinal upset in bees, which can lead to the death of the bee colony in winter.

Honeydew honey, or honey from honeydew, belongs to such types of honey that are dangerous for bees.

This dew appears on the surface of leaves and fruits of plants, sometimes it is of plant origin, and sometimes it is animal secretions of aphids and other insects.

These secretions are sweet and attract bees during the period when the flowering of plants is not intense, or for some reason, the flowers have stopped secreting nectar, which happens during a drought.

Honeydew honey crystallizes very quickly and can turn sour just as quickly, which will harm the bee colony.

Beekeepers try to extract from the hive all the frames with such honey, which is sometimes greenish in color, and sometimes, as I saw at the Mtalyan forum of beekeepers, it is fiery red.

But what is bad for bees is good for people, honeydew honey is highly valued and is even considered medicinal.
