The breath of the city.
They say that breathing is a sign of life which means that the city is alive as long as it breathes.
The breath of the city is especially noticeable on cool days, when clouds of soot and other suspended particles burst out of the depths of the chimneys enveloping the city in man-made clouds.
Yes, this breath goes against the quality of life of people who live next to such chimneys and it becomes much more difficult for them to breathe but there is no choice here: either the life of the city or the life of people.
