Even though it's based on that well-known "gold rush," there were surely those who took advantage of that environment to venture into other fields, and not specifically into gold, although that may have given them their first impetus.

Things like this still happen today, with so much migration. There are those who go elsewhere with something in mind and end up choosing other things, other activities, and they do well. In the end, it's all about willingness and knowing how to see and seize opportunities.
