Restoration Project "Victorian style Fireplace" done by @myskye
Hello my dear Steemians,
Today I am very happy to present you the last restoration work that is done by my hubby @myskye. He is an amateur handyman, he loves everything that is done from timber, stonework and also he loves historical stuff. That was a reason why we decided to take this house. That has an old history built in 1834 and if initially it was rich of features, like fireplaces, old timber doors, shutter and floor made of tiles. The first owners were lovers of old features, later on when further owners moved in and there were few including Church and then people who decided to make it “Bed and Breakfast”. The last owners were who we met and when we saw house there were not many features any more.
This room was one of bedrooms that we decided to do make over couple of years ago and once we moved away a big wardrobe from the wall and we have found this area where it was a cardboard stuck to wall. We were shocked seeing that, my thought was that there is a hole in wall and the owner decided to hide and put wardrobe to cover it. You can see that the wall was painted around wardrobe that is also something that I never saw in the past.
Of course, having that cardboard that was stuck with tape to wall, we removed it and found that area of previous fireplace. The house is from Victorian time and it was no heating then that is why every room had fireplace. You can see there are raw stones and a chimney. So we had a hole but we did not have cast iron and surround.
Luckily I was able to get one online and it was exactly the same size like our hole. Here we checked if the height fits to the area.
Here is the first stage of work, you saw on previous picture that the wall was also broken around so my @myskye used a special material to fill the gaps and strengthen the wall around and leave only the hole just for cast iron, now it is tidy and ready for the next stage.
Of course, the next was to prepare the whole wall and we already covered wall with wallpaper that is painted and looks tidy too. Also you can see that the floor in front is already started to appear as timber, in reality they are tiles made in timber pattern.
Now, the floor in front of fireplace is ready we need only to fill the gaps between the tiles.
Here are the coloured piles that usually on both side of cast iron fireplace.
Here is the cast iron fireplace itself it is extremely heavy and only with help of this sack truck.
That is how it looks from front and it is on the way to the fireplace hole on the wall.
It is almost ready, cast iron and surround are fixed to wall, the only we need to make the edge timber around the floor.
The timber is prepared and now treated with special oil.
Here it is in all its beauty, hand made restoration project of Victorian style fireplace is completed. Hopefully you like it. I, personally really Love it!!!

Looks perfect! Was your husband already a gifted all-round craftsman before the whole restoration, or did you both learn everything during the process?
