The Screen Addict Recommends
I didnโt expect to like ๐๐ฒ๐ป ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ง๐ต๐ถ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ ๐ฎ: ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฎ as much as I did after all the negative reviews.
But then again: I should by now know better than to listen to the critics.
Writer-director Christian Gudegast clearly rewatched ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ (๐ญ๐ต๐ต๐ฑ), ๐ฅ๐ผ๐ป๐ถ๐ป (๐ญ๐ต๐ต๐ด), ๐ข๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ปโ๐ ๐๐น๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ป (๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ญ) and ๐ฆ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ผ: ๐๐ฎ๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐ผ๐น๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ผ (๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ด) before he set out to write the sequel to his modest heist-hit, but who could blame him. In fact โ the amalgamation of these heist classics into ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฎ works like a charm.
Gerard Butler and OโShea Jackson Jr. are solid, as is the rest of the cast.
I was surprised to see Dutch kickboxing-champ Rico Verhoeven in a blink-and-youโll-miss-it part as a mob enforcer. That face and physique definitely deserve more screen time.
Changing the locale to the South of France is a clever move. The atmosphere is almost palpable, and the awesome Vangelis-esque score by Kevin Matley certainly adds to that.
Also โ M83โs Outro over the end credits isnโt a particularly original creative choice anymore, but you still canโt really go wrong with it eitherโฆ
The ending suggests that the filmmakers are confident that there will be a threequel โ and ๐๐ฒ๐ป ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ง๐ต๐ถ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ ๐ฏ has indeed been announced โ but with ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฎ grossing $58 million worldwide against a $40 million production budget, another heist-adventure is anything but a sure bet.
Perhaps Butler, Gudegast and their co-producers should consider retooling the franchise for the small screen. Serializing the concept has worked wonders for the ...๐๐ฎ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ฒ๐ป films (on which Gudegast was a writer as well) and I for one would definitely watch ๐๐ฒ๐ป ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ง๐ต๐ถ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐: ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฒ๐.
In any eventโฆ
