Mental Health: Healing in Order to Make Progress in Life

in WORLD OF XPILAR14 hours ago

Counseling clients sometimes come to me complaining about the fact that they feel like they're "stuck" in their life. No matter what they do it seems like they just can't make any progress.

They may even feel like they've done all the right things, taking all the right courses and self development workshops and still they just can't seem to make progress. In fact, one of the more common observations is that they "keep repeating the same negative patterns over and over."

” It doesn't seem right! I've done so much work on myself in the last couple of years!”

Whereas that may be true, one of the things we often end up digging into is whether any of that work has actually included any authentic healing of old traumas; traumas that may seem unrelated to what is currently taking place.

That's one of the challenging things about bettering your life: you can often do lots and lots of "work" on yourself, but if you don't heal some of the underlying wounds that may not be obvious — and may exist purely in your subconscious — you're still going to end up repeating your old patterns even if you're doing so with ”better information” than you had before.

Sometimes we just have to totally take a break from focusing on moving forward with our lives in order to understand what it is that's lying below the surface, keeping us from making that much desired progress.

I often see this happening in the area of relationships. People may have past trauma that doesn't even have anything to do directly with relationships that is keeping them from having emotionally healthy connections with other people.

The thing about healing — which can be a surprisingly ambiguous piece of terminology — is that we often can't justify just stopping what we're doing, so we can focus on healing. After all, we should be able to just move forward because there are mortgages to be paid, and car payments and other stuff and spending time on healing just seems frivolous.

Doesn't it?

But the thing about healing — true healing — is that it tends to be systemic. When we heal some underlying old trauma, it typically has widespread effects across many aspects of our lives. We end up not only healing the original wound that's been troubling us, but we also end up being able to move forward and be more efficient in other aspects of our lives.

As such, never underestimate the importance of healing as part of the path to move forward with many different parts of your life that you have felt stuck in.

I appreciate you stopping by the blog, and Bright Blessings to all!
