The name of this place is Panam City. Its Bengali name is also known as Panam Nagar. It is located in Sonargaon Upazila of Narayanganj district. I have visited this place 3 times. I first went in 2011, second 2016 and last 2025. When i visited 2011 at that time, this place was not protected. Later, the Bangladesh government took the initiative to protect it. The Bangladesh government ordered the Department of Archaeology to protect it. Then they made it a boundary on all sides. They put gates on 2 ends. They renovated the more dangerous buildings and closed them.

History of Panam City

1000038377.jpg

There were three cities in ancient Sonargaon. Among them, Panam Nagar was the most interesting. There are many buildings here that are several centuries old. It is related to the history of the Bar Bhuiyans of Bengal. This city was built over an area of about 20 square kilometers in Sonargaon Upazila. Panam Nagar is among the 100 historical cities in the world that are in ruins. About 450 years ago, Isha Khan who is the leader of Bar Bhuiyan's community established the first capital of Bengal in Sonargaon in the 15th century. The oldest city in Sonargaon was Panam City. Panam was originally the residence of the rich traders of Bengal at that time. The traders business was from Dhaka to Kolkata. They used to bring and receive trade goods through the Meghna River. As Panam City was located near the Meghna River, traders started settling here. After this, it gradually turned into the historic Panam City. They built this Panam Nagar.

Office Building

1000038308.jpg

This is an office building. This building was a very old building. It has been renovated and made suitable for use. Now the official activities of this establishment are conducted from here.

The Old Buildings

1000038330.jpg

This is an old building. The doors, windows, and brickwork of the building are all visible. Looking at the building structure, it is possible to guess how two-story buildings were built in the old days. The building is very large in length, which shows that many people lived inside a house.

1000038316.jpg

The stairs, doors, and windows of these houses have been locked. Because these houses are now dangerous. They cannot take any kind of pressure. So they have been locked to avoid any kind of remote incident.

1000038391.jpg

Every house has some kind of numbering. Almost every house is almost the same. So they identify it with these numbers.

1000038384.jpg

This is a 1-storey building. There is a public room inside it. If you look at the structure of the building, it seems like a hotel. There are many rooms side by side.

1000038361.jpg

They are very well designed. They are a bit different and an attempt has been made to give a touch of modernity. The buildings of the houses have different designs. This shows that an influential family used to live here.

1000038369.jpg

Some of the houses here are very simple in structure. That means that people used to live there in simple clothes. But some houses look very beautiful.

1000038343.jpg1000038321.jpg

Some parts of the houses are scary to look at. Because they have been made in a very spooky condition. This is the back part of a house.

1000038329.jpg

There are many old houses with one or two floors like this throughout the area. Usually, the way to enter the two-story houses has been blocked. Because the houses are now very risky. The most interesting thing is that you will see that these houses have a lot of windows. In the old days there was no electricity. So, a lot of light and air can enter the house and the hot weather inside the house can escape, so multiple windows have been used here.

1000038366.jpg

There are many small huts outside this house. Soldiers used to guard the house standing in these huts. Perhaps this could be a meeting center. For this, arrangements have been made to deploy a sufficient number of soldiers outside. The security fence has been strengthened.

1000038311.jpg

Other houses inside Panam City. Each house has multiple windows for ventilation. Through these, sufficient light and air can enter the room. This keeps the room cool.

Destroyed building

1000038357.jpg

Some of the houses in very bad condition. There are no doors or windows in this house. Everything has been destroyed.

Interior room

1000038399.jpg

This is the interior of a room. There are small boxes like small boxes on the wall. They probably kept their necessary things here. There are stands carved into the wall to keep candles. Candles were kept in these small places to light the room.

Temple

1000038339.jpg

There is an ancient temple inside it. The temple's structure is quite dangerous, so another new temple has been built next to the temple.

Well

1000038305.jpg

There is a well inside it to draw water. In the past, people used to collect water for cooking from the well. This well is one of the signs of that.

Pond
1000038303.jpg1000038304.jpg

This is a pond. There is a ghat in the pond. There are seats to sit on the pond ghat.

Stage

1000038322.jpg

This is like a stage. It is assumed that some event would have taken place around this stage or stage.

Inside road

1000038344.jpg

This is the internal road inside the city. The roads have been paved with asphalt.

Toilet

1000038306.jpg

Bench

1000038389.jpg
