When we went to check out the project location earlier, since it was in a mountainous area, we had to keep climbing up a road, which took us past a small scenic spot.

As a county-level scenic area, it wasn’t very developed, and even the ancient-style buildings there looked quite simple. Nestled in the deep mountains and old forests, those red-brick and black-tile structures had couplets by their doors that carried a strong classical charm.

Near the entrances on both sides of the buildings, the locals had planted some lotus leaves. By then, though, the lotus flowers were already gone, leaving only the leaves behind.

Inside the buildings, there were displays of local historical records. For instance, there were books and materials like Yuan’an County Chronicles, which documented events from 1979 to 2005.

There were also works by senior local historians and archaeologists. The most prominent among them was Selected Survey and Design Drawings of Ancient Residences, a thick book. Flipping through it, I couldn’t help but marvel at the exquisite craftsmanship of traditional ancient architecture.

In fact, modern architecture and civil engineering programs in universities today mostly focus on contemporary buildings. Time-honored techniques like mortise-and-tenon joints and wooden structures, passed down by our ancestors, have almost been lost.

Even if ancient architecture is covered in architecture courses, it’s usually just a quick mention, with no in-depth study of this knowledge.

It’s really a shame to see the wisdom and skills of ancient Chinese craftsmen fading away.

The ticket for this small scenic spot was cheap, only 10 yuan, but there wasn’t much to see. We also noticed a fortune-telling booth where drawing a lot cost 10 yuan. We just passed by and took a look—I’ve never believed in such things, so I didn’t try it.

It was a scorching day with intense sun. Sitting in that pavilion, though, it was noticeably cooler inside than out. Especially when the two red wooden doors were opened, gusts of mountain wind would blow in, refreshing and much more pleasant than air conditioning. A few of my colleagues and I sat there for a while, chatting. It’s easier to climb up a mountain than to come down, and just thinking about having to struggle back down later made us a bit reluctant.
