My alarm clock went off at 4:15 AM on the dot. That was my cue to grab my skipping rope and head outside. But something inside me wouldn't let me stand up.

Lifting my head a little bit from the pillow, I listened to the samba playing on the roof. “Ha! This rain isn't stopping anytime soon, mbok (please)”.

So with that single thought, I let myself slide back to the Land of Nod.

Why would anyone want to wake from a dream where they are making it big on Steemit? LOL!

I thought it was all going smoothly until my roommate tugged my legs gently. Then aggressively. “Wake up! It's past 9 AM and you still haven't taken your medication”.

“What!” But it was only dark and cloudy a few minutes ago.

She served me bread with custard, then sat on the woman-siddon-talk (a small kitchen stool) to watch me eat.

Maybe not just that.

Before I took my last spoon of custard, I already knew that there was a flood in Lagos Island, and that people were floating out of their houses while still sleeping on their bed.

Those were her words.

She later showed me the weather forecast, videos of the filthy water and started sympathizing with business people who had lost goods worth millions of naira to the rain.

I listened quietly as she added that our table top fridge needed servicing and that I'd fix the evening meal alone if I don't help her mark her pupils’ homework.

I had to make a choice.
The last home work I agreed to mark.

While marking, I wondered which soon-to-be couple offended heaven. Because why will the sky bleed for 6+ hours?

Checking the weather forecast for Lagos, my heart sank again. We muttered words of prayer for everyone affected.

Since I couldn't step out, I decided to have some fun indoors. First, I laid on the mat to watch a trending movie by Tyler Perry called "Straw".

It made me reflect deeply about life — the effect of poverty and our choices.

Imagine how one wrong move on a desperate day broke the last straw a single mother had been walking around with.

Should anyone ever be pushed past their breaking point?

With this on my mind, I sat down to journal my thoughts. Despite the rain, I've had a productive day. I'm about to retire with a book. Would have dinner afterwards. I hope you had a great day as well.
