Having a Hobby Could Save Your Mental Health

In my previous post, I mentioned about getting sick and have to be confined in the hospital for a few weeks. I was getting treatment for the illness but I was getting weak mentally. That is because I have to stay alone in a room, no windows, no TV and no chance to see the sunlight. You'll not even know if it's evening or day time except when you check the time on your watch or phone. I have my mobile phone and is connected to the internet but nothing beats the physical connection to people especially being with my husband and daughter. They weren't allowed to see me or come near me as my disease can be easily transmitted.

During those days, I needed to find something to do to pass time and get rid of boredom and anxiety thinking of when will I get discharged (hospital is very strict of releasing patients with TB). I'm so emotionally sick not because of the disease but because of the stress of spending time in the hospital (it was the longest time I stayed in a hospital as far as I could remember).

So while waiting for endless tests and results, I thought of just do my favorite hobby which is crocheting. I asked my husband to buy and bring me some yarns and hook. He did and came to the hospital to give them the next day. He handed them to the nurse and when I got them, I immediately started creating my projects. This hobby had saved me from the boredom and anxiety. It actually reduced the stress and kept my mind relaxed. I felt the strength to think positively that everything will pass and I will get discharged soon.

Now, I continue to do my hobby and made a lot of stuff out of it from bags to stuffed toys and many others. It's still making me feel relaxed on my struggling days.
