Horror Club: A Dead Relationship

in #horrorclublast month

It was early autumn when the rumors started to spread of a strange light floating around the graveyard in a small town in northern Alberta. There was talk of ghosts, perhaps a spirit orb of the recently deceased. After a couple of days a small group of brave men went to the graveyard to investigate. It didn't take long to find the source of light; an electric lantern held by a sturdy built middle aged man.

They found the man about three feet into the dirt digging up the grave of a long deceased woman. The man pleaded to be left alone, but didn't put up any resistance as the men dragged him out of the grave and into the local police detachment.

The grave robber insisted that he was no thief. He made up a story of how every morning he would wake up with the decaying corpse of his ex-wife laying next to him. As he opened his eyes her empty sockets would be staring back at him, bits of skin falling off her exposed skull. He insisted it was not the remanence of a nightmare as she would not leave the bed; the corpse would stay there motionless until he went to sleep again. Of course, no one could see this mysterious corpse to verify his story.

He believed the only way to get rid of his ex was to burn the remains of her body; however, he hadn't seen her in over a decade and was unable to track down where she had last lived. Before being arrested he had apparently spent months driving around to different towns and digging up any grave with her first name and an appropriate time of death. This was the most he could go on as he had no idea if she had remarried.

Ultimately, despite reports of him starting each morning in his cell by screaming and crying, the jury did not buy the story and rejected his plea of insanity. He was sentenced to three years in a minimum security prison for desecration of a burial site.

A prison cot is pretty small. If he was telling the truth one can't help but wonder how the two of them still fit in the same bed.
