XL citizen center is a radio program organized by XL106.9 FM Uyo in Akwa Ibom State Nigeria. It is a program that give citizen of Akwa Ibom State to air their view on the issues or projects that concern them in the state level, Federal level and international respectively.

So today 12-09-2025 on the XL citizen center, the bone of contention was Resident Doctors has commenced a five-days warning strike on the government failure to attend to their needs.

According to report on the XL citizen center, there has been several ultimatum, so on the first national executive council meeting in January in Abuja, demands was made by the doctors to the government to pay some of their demands as statutory, and that was the increment of salary to the resident doctors, training and medical equipment (Healthcare System.

In May here in Uyo the capital city of Akwa Ibom State, National Ordinary General Meeting was held, and ultimatum was issued to the government to look into their demands that where raised, unfortunately, the government paid deaf ears to their demands. Another meeting was held in Calabar on July, still reiterating on the issues that was raised, all to no avails. Another extraordinary meeting was held on the 31st of August, and a message was sent to the government, i.e, “10 days ultimatum”, that if they refuse to attend to their demand this time, they will embarked on a strike, the government did not still responded to their demand.

So on the 10th of September, the meet to review and also take drastic action by sending another signal to the government to take action in 24 Hours because they did not really want to go on strike, but still government refuses to act, so they have no other choice than to embarked on strike.
This is the best way to confront the government to get what they want as reported.

So at this point, they were ask on their core demand that if the government takes cares of it, they will go back to their offices to resume their jobs

They core Demands are:

1. Medical repository Funds: This are funds to be given to resident Doctors to write their exams, and in a couple of years ago, the fees to the exams where tie down to Dollars rate, meaning the transaction for the exams are made in Dollars. On the other hand, they were complaining bitterly that their two month salary does not pay for the one exam.

2. In 2023, the government review their salary to 25% to 35%, unfortunately, they refuse to pay the arias from 2023. Still that same year, Judiciary salaries was increased to 300%, and it was paid, recently, 100% salary has been increased for political office holder and it has been paid, but common 25% - 35%, they could not pay compares to that of Judiciary and political office holders.

3. During their specialist training, their certificate in part one Exams, the government downgraded it. This particular training and certificate, will help the Doctors and Nurses to do other Job or program in the country and outside the country.

4. In some of our state tertiary institution like in Oyo state where the resident has been on strike for a couple of week now, because of salary, the student Doctors that are under training are earning different salary from those working at the general hospital.

According to the reporter, after the five days strike, general annual meeting will be held in Katsina State and will start on the 21st of September, and will hope to review what so ever the government will say regarding the strike and the demand from the Doctors and if they are not satisfied, they will go on a total and indefinite strike

During an interactive session, Mr. Silas call from Nsit Ubium to know the distinguish between the resident Doctors and the one that embarked on strike, the despondence says that in medical field, there are terms to be used to described a word, that the resident Doctors are the same as the the one embarked on strike.
