1.4 billion Chinese people couldn't protect a single young girl
In 2024, a netizen claiming to be “Lee Yee Syue” from Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, gained online attention.
She sought help through a live stream and recounted her experiences of being tortured in a mental hospital.
Two incidents stood out in particular.
First, staff members would insert a hook into a patient's nasal cavity, pulling out the flesh inside, causing the patient unbearable pain while leaving no visible signs on the surface.
Second, patients were frequently pricked with needles, leaving their bodies covered in needle marks, yet these injuries were also invisible from the outside.
She emphasized that the constant screams heard from the psychiatric hospital were not from patients experiencing episodes, but rather from patients being tortured.
Initially, she had gotten into an argument with someone and sought police intervention, only to be sexually harassed by a auxiliary police officer. She then began relentlessly advocating for her rights.
She was then deemed mentally unstable by the relevant authorities and forcibly admitted to a mental hospital.
After her release, Lee Yee Syue began live-streaming for help, sparking a major online uproar. All netizens began paying attention. At the same time, the relevant authorities intervened, and a large amount of information about Lee Yee Syue was directly censored online.
Simultaneously, numerous online accounts began posting comments claiming that Lee Yee Syue was mentally ill, a threat to society, and a threat to the nation.
Lee Yee Syue was once again detained.
In November of the same year, Beijing An Ding Hospital conducted a psychiatric evaluation of her, concluding that she had a personality disorder but possessed full civil capacity and could be held criminally liable.
These two conclusions are directly contradictory. Having a personality disorder implies that one is not criminally liable. However, it is clear that An Ding Hospital's evaluation conclusion was highly creative.
In December, Lee Yee Syue was admitted to a psychiatric hospital again. As for whether she underwent a forced prefrontal lobotomy, there has been no information to date.
It is worth noting that throughout the process of Lee Yee Syue's detention, many websites closely monitored the situation. Several bloggers even traveled to Nanchang at their own expense to inquire about the outcome of Lee Yee Syue's case and hoped to meet the girl. They also updated videos online to share their progress. However, the online accounts of these individuals were subsequently banned.
As the saying goes, among 1.4 billion Chinese people, we couldn't protect a single young girl.
