I Love Nature Photo Challenge (People) - St. Isaac's Cathedral 🙎💒📷
This is my contribution to the photo challenge #Ilovenature on Whaleshares - today's theme is people.
I apologise to Victoria for my grumpiness on this day, but we were 100m above the ground - with it being November it was absolutely freezing! St. Isaac's Cathedral is the largest orthodox basilica and the fourth largest cathedral in the world. It is dedicated to Saint Isaac of Dalmatia, the patron saint of Peter the Great, who was born on the feast day.
Unlike most of Russia's onion domes, St. Isaac's is an example of late classicism with a number of directions such as Renaissance and Byzantine. It is unique from a Russian architectural standpoint and this makes it a dominant feature of the Saint Petersburg. Shortly before we climbed the roof I also got to witness an orthodox service for the first time, and recently my newborn was baptised into the same church.
