These questions on immigration to the US will likely go unanswered...
Seeing videos of immigrants being taken by plainclothes pseudo ICE agents online...
I just cannot understand it.
I worked as a camp counselor in 2006.
Some of the people who were the kindest to me are probably MAGA today. I mean, they owned a military/hunting apparel shop in Port Jervis, Greater NY area, all with guns included.
I found them one day off I found myself lost, wandering around town. I had a total $5 in my pocket and it was over 100F outside.
I was dehydrated.
I entered the shop and asked for water. They took one look at me and noticed I wasn't a local and that I was in need of help. They asked where I was from. I told them. They noticed I only had one $5 bill left. They gave me water for free and directed me to the closest Bank of America.
That branch had already closed for the day and I despaired. I had no way to go back to the camp.
One of the employees, again, a full-blooded American, gave me a ride back to the campsite, noticing that I was utterly lost. She also help me cash out my paycheck. She was an absolute angel.
That was nearly 20 years ago.
It wasn't a 100 years ago.
What happened?
What went wrong?
Americans didn't use to be like this. If so, they managed to hide it pretty well from me, a Latin American whose English wasn't so good back then.
Again: what happened?
These questions may go unanswered. However, please feel free to share this image with immigrants that may need help staying legal in the USA. I also work with a paralegal who can orient them and who will not cheat them out of their money.
