Using the contest tips, I will share my perspective on this topic;

Do you believe advanced technologies open the door to advanced crimes? Your viewpoint.

Yes, I strongly believe that advanced technology open the door to advanced crimes. Everything has its positive and negative impacts, we are seeing it both in this present era of technology already. Advanced tools are being invented, we make use of them and so are those into cyber crimes.

The encrypted messaging social medias we enjoy and use today for privacy are the same in which criminals are using to scam and remain anonymous in the media.

These advanced technology makes it hard too to detect criminal. The use of artificial intelligence to write, send mails and generate fake photos also makes it easier for them to operate remotely and believable to their target.

Do you believe we must need an antidote before launching any technology? Justify.

Yes, I think it is necessary to put in place a control center on how to safeguard the side effects of advanced technology before launching them because this will help lower the risk of criminal using it.

However, we all know that criminals are smart and would always find a way to escape some certain verification but it is important to put in place some regulations especially on misuse detection.

Share some tips through which we can alert old family members and society's view of cybercrime.

Older people are very vulnerable and are not updated with what is really happening in this technology era. It is our duty to guide, protect and create that awareness for them. When it comes to cyber crimes, the target is always older people because they tend to believe and absorb whatever information they hear/ see without verification.

Like I said earlier, it is our duty to protect them. What can we do;

  • Educate them on how to protect their personal information/ data
  • Educate them on the possible signs of scammers.
  • Tell them not to click on unknown links, they should not share OTPs or PINS with anyone and make sure to verify any ‘too good to be true’ information before proceeding to do anything.
  • Help them to keep their software updated
  • Share information regarding cyber crimes with them on their social media for reminder
  • Make use of a two factor authentication code for them
Society's View
  • Currently, the awareness on cyber crimes has increased but it seems slow because those living in underdeveloped areas are still falling victim
  • Many still lack digital literacy which gives room to more scam
  • Blaming, shaming and judging victims for being stupid and vulnerable to scammers

I will invite @josepha @mvchacin and @isha.ish to join the community contest.
