Funny you say that, the first time I went abroad from the UK in 1983 - I worked as a mechanic on a international motorbike racing team, we had to travel in a van with the bike and tools, we went all the way through France and into Spain, most of the public toilets we came across were the same, just a hole in the floor to squat over. I can happily say it is no longer like that and now they have thrones to sit on like most of the world. :-)
