The learning curve here can be steep at first. Some tips:

• When posting, quality over quantity is your friend.
• Reading others’s posts, upvoting when appropriate, and commenting relevantly is a great way to get acclimated. “Nice post!” type generic comments do not go over well.
• Never beg for followers or upvotes.
• Don’t go wild with upvoting at first. Newbies essentially get allotted 10 upvotes per 24 hours. You can do more than that, but votes become less powerful the more you use them.
• Steem Power is the key. Power up on a regular basis.
• In your early days here, don’t flag anyone. Over time, you’ll learn when to flag judiciously. But for a noob, there are pitfalls.
• Plan to be here for the long-term. The Steem blockchain has immense potential. You are an early adopter.
