Nei giorni scorsi si e' ricordato il 99 esimo anniversario dalla nascita di Fidel, siamo entrati nell'anno del centenario.
Sia chiaro, massimo rispetto per l'immagine e per la storia del Lider Maximo, ma e' bene ricordare che milioni di cubani hanno lasciato il paese nei decenni del suo regno, il cubano non poteva entrare in molti alberghi del suo paese, non poteva possedere un auto o una casa, la sola formula per spostarsi di abitazione era quella truffa legalizzata della donazione, c'era la carta blanca che decideva quale cubano poteva uscire dal paese e quale doveva rimanerci.

Ai reduci dell'Angola che il paese africano voleva ricompensare, uno a uno, fattivamente, Fidel regalo' una radio...dicendo che l'impegno internazionalista non ha bisogno di compensi....che poi al paese sono comunque arrivati...
Queste cose, per onesta' intellettuale vanno dette, altrimenti e' solo agiografia a buon mercato.

Pero' Fidel era Fidel.
In questi momenti di drammatica crisi economica la gente dice a gran voce che Fidel non avrebbe permesso tutto questo.
Parliamo di un paese che non ha avuto un Presidente o un Primo Ministro, ma un Comandante en Jefe, non e' esattamente la stessa cosa.
Fidel e' stato Jefe, pare, madre, fratello, cugino Comandante e tante, tante altre cose.

Che poi ci fossero casini anche sotto di lui e' palese basta pensare al Maleconazo, il Mariel, gli episodi descritti in Scarface e a molti altri.
Pero' la gente lo adorava, quale capo di stato al mondo poteva permettersi i suoi bagni di folla con la scorta assente o invisibile?
Oggi se un leader ci prova minimo gli sparano.

Lo si vedeva dividere il povero pranzo con gli operai, i contadini, la povera gente, pranzo che lui giudicava "tremendo almuerzo!"
All'alba girava per le vie della capitale, si fermava a parlare con la gente, ascoltava i loro problemi, se oggi ci prova Diaz Canel lo fanno secco.

Manca Fidel, manca a tutta Cuba, manca al mondo o perlomeno a quella parte del mondo che crede che un'altra via sia possibile.
Manca alla povera gente, al popolo, alle persone per bene, a chi ha bisogno di una guida, di una parola giusta detta al momento giusto, di un sogno irrealizzabile ma in cui e' bello credere.

Manca anche a noi, turisti con fedi politiche differenti, ci garantiva sicurezza, stabilita', un certo occhio di riguardo, la consapevolezza di essere in un paese unico al mondo.
Gente cosi' ne nasce una ogni secolo o ogni due secoli, ce ne vorrebbe un altro, un comandante rivoluzionario.
Ma i tempi sono cambiati, finiti i giganti della storia siamo oramai nelle mani dei nani e delle ballerine.

In recent days, we commemorated the 99th anniversary of Fidel's birth, marking the centenary year.
Let me be clear: the utmost respect for the image and history of the Most Powerful Leader, but it's worth remembering that millions of Cubans left the country during his decades of reign. Cubans couldn't enter many hotels in their country, they couldn't own a car or a house, the only way to move was through the legalized scam of donations. There was a carte blanca that decided which Cubans could leave the country and which could stay.

To the Angolan veterans whom the African country wanted to reward, one by one, Fidel actually gave a radio... saying that internationalist commitment doesn't need compensation... which, in the end, reached the country anyway...
These things, for intellectual honesty, must be said; otherwise, it's just cheap hagiography.

But Fidel was Fidel.
In these times of dramatic economic crisis, people are loudly saying that Fidel wouldn't have allowed all this.
We're talking about a country that didn't have a President or a Prime Minister, but a Commander in Chief; it's not exactly the same thing.
Fidel was a Commander, apparently, a mother, a brother, a cousin, and many, many other things.

That there were troubles even under his reign is clear—just think of the Maleconazo, the Mariel Pier, the episodes described in Scarface, and many others.
But the people adored him; what head of state in the world could afford his crowds with no or invisible security detail?
Today, if a leader tries, they'll at least shoot him.

He was seen sharing a meager lunch with workers, farmers, and the poor, a lunch he called "a terrible lunch!"
At dawn, he wandered the streets of the capital, stopping to talk to people, listening to their problems. If Diaz-Canel tried today, they'd kill him.

Fidel is missing, all of Cuba is missing him, the world is missing him, or at least that part of the world that believes another way is possible.
The poor, the masses, the good people, those who need guidance, the right word said at the right time, an unattainable dream that's beautiful to believe in, miss him too.

We, tourists with different political beliefs, miss him too. He guaranteed us security, stability, a certain respect, the knowledge that we're in a country unlike any other in the world.
People like that are born once every century or two; we need another, a revolutionary commander.
But times have changed; with the giants of history gone, we're now in the hands of dwarves and ballerinas.
