Immaginatevi di essere il Signor James Nabors, vivete a Miami e, per guadagnarvi da vivere, affittate barche e yatch ai turisti.
Immaginatevi che arriva da voi tal Floyd Dean Devasier, un tipo di 63 anni di origine cubana che, si e' saputo poi, aveva alcuni precedenti per spaccio di droga.
Il tipo vorrebbe affittare uno yatch, arriva col denaro contante, voi pensate che voglia farsi una bella gita sulle Key magari con un po' di gnocca a bordo come nei videos di Pitbull.
Devasier salpa con a bordo una signora di 38 anni, si dirige in acque internazionali per entrare poi in quelle cubane.

Los guardafronteras intercettano l'imbarcazione che viene fatta attraccare al porto dell'Avana, le autorita' statunitensi vengono subito avvisate.
Visto che il tipo era pure ricercato viene coordinato fra le due autorita' dei rispettivi paesi l'immediato rientro negli Stati Uniti con repentino arresto.
Ma la barca resta a Cuba.

James Nabors, il proprietario del natante, vuole recuperare il suo habeo e parte per l'Avana con tutti i documenti legali che dimostrano che la barca era sua.
Non conosceva la burocrazia cubana...
Si ritrova a bordo della sua barca senza poter scendere, la burocrazia cubana gli ha chiesto ulteriore documentazione.

A quel punto entra in gioco la politica, Nabors contatta un congressista dello stato della Florida, Jimmy Patronis che interviene e grazie alla guardia costiera americana si riannodano i fili con le autorita' cubane.
Dopo vari giorni di tira e molla finalmente le autorita' cubane danno il permesso all'imbarcazione e al suo proprietario di salpare verso nord.
Ovviamente visto che il proprietario non era pratico di rotte ha dovuto far venire un meccanico/pilota dagli Stati Uniti per il viaggio.

Questo fatto mette in risalto come quando, per episodi simili, deve entrare in ballo la diplomazia internazionale, soprattutto fra due paesi che si guardano in cagnesco, tutto si complica.
"Luchamos contra la burocracia, no contra las personas" ha detto Nabors al termine di tutta la faccenda.
Non e' il primo episodio del genere, gia' nel 2019 uno yatch affittato era finito nelle acque cubane con tutte le conseguenze del caso.

Devasier, il tipo che ha portato la barca a Cuba ora dovra' rispondere alle autorita' Usa di furto e altre violazioni della normativa marittima.
Pero' questo episodio dimostra come quando le autorita' dei due paesi collaborano i problemi si risolvono.

THE BOAT

Imagine you're Mr. James Nabors, you live in Miami, and to make a living, you rent boats and yachts to tourists.
Imagine a man named Floyd Dean Devasier arrives, a 63-year-old Cuban who, as it turned out, had a criminal record for drug dealing.
The guy wants to rent a yacht, arrives with cash, and you think he wants to take a nice trip to the Keys, perhaps with some hotties on board, like in Pitbull's videos.
Devasier sets sail with a 38-year-old woman on board, heading for international waters and then into Cuban waters.

The border guards intercept the vessel, which is docked in the port of Havana. The US authorities are immediately notified.
Since the guy was also wanted, the two authorities of their respective countries coordinate his immediate return to the United States and swift arrest.
But the boat remains in Cuba.

James Nabors, the owner of the vessel, wants to recover his habeo and leaves for Havana with all the legal documents proving the boat was his.
He wasn't familiar with Cuban bureaucracy...
He finds himself aboard his boat, unable to disembark; the Cuban bureaucracy has asked him for additional documentation.

At that point, politics comes into play. Nabors contacts a Florida congressman, Jimmy Patronis, who intervenes, and thanks to the US Coast Guard, the threads with the Cuban authorities are reconnected.
After several days of back-and-forth, the Cuban authorities finally grant permission for the vessel and its owner to sail north.
Obviously, since the owner wasn't familiar with the routes, he had to bring a mechanic/pilot from the United States for the trip.

This fact highlights how when, for incidents like this, international diplomacy must be brought into play, especially between two countries that glare at each other, everything gets complicated.
"We fight against bureaucracy, not against people," Nabors said at the end of the whole affair.

This isn't the first episode of its kind; in 2019, a rented yacht ended up in Cuban waters, with all the consequences that entailed.

Devasier, the man who brought the boat to Cuba, will now have to answer to US authorities for theft and other violations of maritime regulations.

But this episode demonstrates how when the authorities of the two countries cooperate, problems are solved.
